SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

Located just outside of Seattle, WA,Lake Washington Institute of Technology (LWTech) was founded in 1949, and is the only public institute of technology in the state of Washington. LWTech offers 12 bachelors degrees, 42 associate degrees, and 70 professional certificates in 41 areas of study, including STEM-focused programs in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

LWTech serves the Eastside and is located within the city of Kirkland, which is situated on the eastern shore of Lake Washington. Kirkland is home to companies such as GoDaddy, Google, Astronics and EvergreenHealth, and the college is within minutes from Microsoft and Nintendo.

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

The Dean of Instruction - General Education, offers an exciting opportunity to provide crucial strategic instructional leadership at Lake Washington Institute of Technology, working collaboratively to nurture a positive, inclusive, and accountable culture. This position will respond to regional economic development needs, steer the design of innovative program development and curriculum that enhance employees skills and knowledge, promote student access, success, and completion in certificate to baccalaureate programs, recruit and retain students and faculty, support the seeking of and management of major grants and contracts, and ensure stewardship of state and other funds.

The Dean will be a visionary, exploring interdisciplinary collaboration, technological innovation, and approaches to learning and implementation of promising practices in teaching and learning. Currently, the Basic Education for Adults (BEdA) department reports to this Dean and is lead by an Associate Dean. Continuance of this reporting structure is dependent on the experience and skills of the incoming Dean.

The Dean has responsibility for the day-to-day division operations and is the first-line supervisor of assigned full-time and part-time faculty and support staff. This is a contracted, exempt administrative position that reports to the Vice President of Instruction.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Strategic Leadership, Academic Quality, and Student Success

  • Foster a culture of relevant, rigorous, innovative, and inclusive learning
  • Support student success through effective leadership, planning, and resource allocation
  • Lead innovation within the instructional division and promote continuous improvement in teaching and learning
  • Maintain knowledge of current trends, developments, and best practices in higher education and assigned disciplines
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and encourage professional growth among division employees
  • Maintain program assessment processes and ensure instructional quality, effectiveness, and student learning outcomes

Academic Program Development and Curriculum Leadership

  • Coordinate the development, review, and continuous improvement of new and existing academic programs
  • Collaborate with instructional teams to establish program goals, objectives, and strategic priorities
  • Conduct program reviews, viability studies, and recommendations for program modification or expansion
  • Ensure communication with and consideration of recommendations from Technical Advisory Committees regarding curriculum and technology needs
  • Develop, maintain, and evaluate external accreditation, licensure, and certification requirements relevant to assigned programs
  • Lead efforts to attain and maintain programmatic accreditations and industry-recognized credentials
  • Serve as the college representative to the SBCTC Articulation and Transfer Committee and support statewide transfer initiatives
  • Serve as the primary liaison for general education and transfer-related matters with internal and external stakeholders, including community colleges and universities
  • Support accreditation efforts related to General Education and College-Wide Learning Outcomes

Faculty and Staff Leadership

  • Recommend, hire, orient, train, supervise, mentor, and evaluate division employees in accordance with collective bargaining agreements and college policies
  • Establish performance expectations and oversee employee development and improvement plans
  • Ensure faculty evaluations support professional growth and compliance with state vocational certification requirements
  • Oversee the faculty tenure process consistent with collective bargaining agreements
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing work environment within the instructional division

Enrollment, Scheduling, and Instructional Operations

  • Manage class and program enrollment to support student access and program sustainability
  • Determine faculty instructional assignments and workload distribution
  • Oversee the development of quarterly class schedules and long-range instructional planning
  • Assist in resolving student instructional concerns and support effective student-faculty engagement
  • Supervise the operation, maintenance, and improvement of facilities, equipment, and instructional resources to ensure safe and effective use

Budget, Resource Management, and Compliance

  • Develop, implement, and monitor divisional budgets in compliance with college, state, and federal guidelines
  • Manage departmental resources to align with strategic priorities and operational needs
  • Assist in securing grants, donations, and external funding opportunities
  • Implement and interpret applicable policies, procedures, contracts, and collective bargaining agreements
  • Ensure compliance with institutional, regulatory, accreditation, and contractual requirements

Data Analysis, Reporting, and Decision-Making

  • Analyze and apply relevant data to support planning, resource allocation, and decision-making
  • Prepare and oversee the preparation of reports for internal and external stakeholders
  • Monitor program performance and identify opportunities for improvement and innovation
  • Advise college leadership and staff on departmental matters and recommend solutions to emerging issues

External Relations, Shared Governance, and College Leadership

  • Represent the college in community activities, advisory boards, professional organizations, and state and national councils
  • Build and maintain partnerships with business, industry, educational institutions, and community stakeholders
  • Host and facilitate meetings with advisory groups and external partners as appropriate
  • Participate in shared governance and institutional planning processes
  • Assist other college administrators as needed and perform additional duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Masters degree from an accredited institution
  • Three (3) of more years of progressively responsible leadership experience in higher education, including supervisory responsibility for faculty, staff, or academic initiatives
  • Demonstrated experience in academic administration within a postsecondary environment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of transfer education, articulation agreements, course equivalency processes
  • Knowledge of accreditation standards, academic policies, curriculum development processes, and state and federal regulations impacting higher education.
  • Demonstrated experience with budget development, resource allocation, and financial management in an educational setting
  • College-level teaching experience
  • Demonstrated understanding of effective instructional practices and student learning outcomes assessment
  • Experience leading, supervising, mentoring, and evaluating faculty and education professionals
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex academic issues, develop solutions, and make sound decisions in support of institutional goals and student success
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, collaboration, and conflict resolution skills with the ability to build productive relationships across divisions and groups
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and student success with experience effectively working with diverse students, faculty, and staff
  • Proficient with technology and data systems used to support academic administration and decision-making, including Microsoft Office applications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Earned doctorate from an accredited institution
  • Experience in Basic Skills, Developmental Education, Transitional Studies, Adult Basic Education, English Language acquisition, or related student transition programs
  • Knowledge of workforce education and the integration of general education outcomes within professional-technical and career pathway programs
  • Understanding of the role of general education in supporting transfer readiness, workforce preparation, and lifelong learning
  • Experience fostering collaboration between general education and professional-technical faculty to support student success and program effectiveness
  • Experience serving as a full-time academic administrator in a community or technical college setting
  • Experience collaborating with baccalaureate institutions on developing or maintaining transfer and articulation agreements
  • Experience leading accreditation activities, academic program review, and/or continuous improvement initiatives

Compensation & Work Schedule

Salary placement is $10,895 per month. This is a 40-hours per week, exempt position.
