Job Responsibilities

The Dean of Student Engagement provides leadership and strategic oversight for student success, engagement, retention, campus life, and campus operations. This position develops and implements student-centered programs, services, and retention strategies that support student access, engagement, persistence, completion, and post-graduation success, collaborates with Academic Affairs and Student Services departments to ensure the effective delivery of support services, fosters an inclusive and welcoming campus environment, and promotes continuous improvement through data-informed decision-making.

Job Functions of the Dean of Student Engagement:

  • Student Support, Advocacy, and Retention - Collaborates with advising, counseling, and academic affairs to promote student success and ensure the seamless integration of support services across the College. Leads the development and implementation of innovative, data-informed programs and a comprehensive retention strategy aligned with institutional goals to improve student engagement, persistence, and completion. Prepares regular reports on departmental operations, retention efforts, and post-graduation outcomes. Evaluates and enhances processes to ensure the Student Success Center operates effectively and efficiently. Oversees orientation, welcome programs, and first-year experience initiatives, while identifying and addressing barriers to engagement, particularly for nontraditional students. Fosters an inclusive campus environment and advocates for student needs and concerns. Collaborates with campus partners to address student conduct and behavioral issues. Supports the development of targeted programming for at-risk students and contributes to the implementation of an effective early alert system. Advances the use of technology-based services and tools to improve student access, engagement, and overall success. Along with others, holds responsibility for compliance with Titles VI, VII, and IX of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and other laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to higher education.
  • Leadership and Strategic Planning - Leads the development and execution of a comprehensive student engagement strategy aligned with institutional goals to support retention and completion. Establishes a unified, student-centered approach to service delivery, continuously improving and innovating to enhance effectiveness. Cultivates and leads a high-performing team that operates with creativity, precision, and agility to foster a culture of belonging, support, and care for all students. Oversees departmental operations, including staffing, budget management, and resource planning. Conducts needs assessments for equipment, technology, and facilities and makes recommendations to the Vice President. Develops, implements, and updates policies and procedures to ensure efficient operations and high-quality service delivery, while addressing departmental concerns and supporting internal and external stakeholders. Supervises staff, identifies professional development opportunities, and evaluates performance. Develops and implements comprehensive communication strategies across print, web, and social media platforms. Collaborates with the Vice President in planning and participating in meetings to support the development, communication, and execution of policies, procedures, and recruitment and retention initiatives. Fosters strong relationships with internal departments, both within and outside the Student Services Division and key external constituents.
  • Student Activities and Campus Life - Continuously evaluates programs and services to ensure the College effectively meets the evolving needs of prospective students and current students across all locations. Oversees the collection, analysis, and dissemination of data to inform service delivery and ensure compliance with reporting requirements. Partners with faculty and academic administration, as well as external offices, to assess needs and coordinate services.
  • Campus Operations - Oversees campus operations and student services delivery to ensure effective, compliant, and student-focused processes, while coordinating retention strategies that support enrollment, persistence, and completion. Oversees and collaborates with Campus Coordinators to maintain consistent, high-quality support, compliance, facilities, safe working environment, Supports Campus Coordinator efforts to identify new programs and opportunities to meet industry needs and student interests.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

A masters degree in a related discipline, plus six (6) years of progressively responsible related work experience. Must have a valid drivers license.

Preferred Qualifications

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors. Must be able to demonstrate the proven abilities of intellectual reasoning, power of persuasion, and consistent dedication to the position. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical interference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Knowledge of Microsoft Office software (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word). Ability to learn to operate College-specific software and applications.

Additional Comments

Must be a dedicated and driven professional who demonstrates energy, vision, and charisma. Must be able to exercise both authority and good judgment in a variety of situations, demonstrating exceptional leadership characteristics and interpersonal skills. Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and to work in a high-volume, fast-paced, goal-oriented atmosphere, both independently and as part of a unified team. Must be familiar with the major issues of recruitment and retention present in the realm of higher education and able to discuss options and alternatives to address them. Excellent leadership, customer service, phone, mentoring, training, and organizational skills are necessary. Work is performed primarily in an office environment and requires prolonged periods of sitting and standing, as well as frequent use of a computer, telephone, and other standard office equipment. The position requires occasional lifting and/or moving of materials weighing up to 25 pounds. Travel throughout the College's three-county service area is required, with occasional evening and weekend work. The position requires the ability to communicate effectively in person, virtually, and in writing, and to move between campus locations and sites as needed.
