Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in educational leadership, counseling, administration, or related field;
  • NM teaching License with endorsements as needed.
  • Experience working in student supervision, discipline, or leadership roles.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.

Position Summary:
The Dean of Students provides leadership and direct support for student behavior, attendance, school climate, student engagement, and wellness systems in alignment with the district’s strategic priorities and the school’s instructional mission. The Dean serves as a key member of the school leadership team and leads implementation of proactive, restorative, and student-centered systems designed to support academic success, belonging, safety, and positive student outcomes.

The Dean of Students supports implementation of a schoolwide Restorative Practices and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) model. The Dean of Students position emphasizes prevention, relationship-centered leadership, equitable practices, and alternatives to exclusionary discipline while collaborating with students, families, staff, and community partners to support the success of all students.

  • Support development and implementation of a safe, inclusive, and positive school climate aligned with district strategic priorities.
  • Serve as a leader in fostering a culture of belonging, student engagement, and high expectations for behavior and conduct.
  • Support schoolwide systems that promote positive relationships, student connectedness, and social-emotional well-being.
  • Collaborate with school leadership in monitoring climate data and supporting continuous improvement efforts.
  • Assist in implementation of student voice structures, leadership opportunities, and belonging initiatives.
  • Support operational systems that contribute to effective and responsive student support structures.

Restorative Practices and PBIS Implementation

  • Lead implementation of schoolwide Restorative Practices with fidelity, including proactive community-building, restorative responses, and alternatives to exclusionary discipline.
  • Support implementation and continuous improvement of a Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) model.
  • Coordinate behavior support systems, interventions, and progressive discipline practices consistent with district policy and student rights protections.
  • Provide coaching and support to staff regarding restorative responses, behavior supports, and relationship-centered practices.
  • Monitor discipline data to identify trends, reduce disproportionality, and improve student outcomes.
  • Support reduction of suspensions and exclusionary responses through preventive and restorative approaches.

Attendance Improvement and MLSS Supports

  • Support school attendance improvement efforts through Multi-Layered Systems of Supports (MLSS).
  • Monitor attendance data and dashboards to identify students needing intervention or re-engagement support.
  • Coordinate or support tiered attendance interventions, family outreach, and re-engagement strategies.
  • Collaborate with counselors, social workers, administrators, and support teams to address barriers to attendance.
  • Support implementation of early warning systems and proactive outreach to reduce chronic absenteeism.
  • Assist in improving student attendance outcomes through prevention-oriented supports and interventions.

Counseling, Wellness, and Student Support Coordination

  • Support student access to counseling, mental health services, and culturally responsive supports.
  • Collaborate with counselors, school-based support staff, and community providers regarding student referrals and intervention coordination.
  • Assist in implementation of systems supporting social-emotional wellness, crisis response, and student support follow-through.
  • Support referral processes and interventions designed to address student needs impacting learning, engagement, or behavior.
  • Promote trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and student-centered support practices.

Student Discipline and Conduct Administration

  • Support administration of student conduct processes consistent with district policy, due process requirements, and applicable law.
  • Investigate and respond to student conduct concerns in a fair, consistent, and educationally sound manner.
  • Maintain documentation, records, and reports related to discipline, interventions, and student support actions.
  • Work collaboratively with administrators and staff to resolve student conflicts and support positive behavior outcomes.
  • Communicate effectively with students and families regarding conduct expectations, interventions, and support plans.

Student Voice, Belonging, and Leadership Development

  • Promote structures that elevate student voice and participation in school improvement efforts.
  • Support programs and activities that foster belonging, inclusion, and positive student identity.
  • Assist in development of student leadership opportunities and engagement initiatives.
  • Support use of student climate survey feedback and other evidence sources to inform school climate improvement.
  • Encourage student ownership aligned with Portrait of a Graduate competencies.

Data, Monitoring, and Continuous Improvement

  • Analyze attendance, behavior, climate, and support data to inform decision-making and interventions.
  • Support implementation monitoring and use of evidence sources related to strategic priorities.
  • Assist the principal in monitoring progress toward school goals related to climate, attendance, and student supports.
  • Prepare reports and documentation related to student discipline, attendance, and intervention outcomes.
  • Use data to support continuous improvement cycles and targeted supports.

Professional Collaboration and Leadership

  • Serve as an active member of the school leadership team.
  • Collaborate with teachers, counselors, intervention teams, and district staff to strengthen student support systems.
  • Provide professional support and training to staff related to behavior systems, restorative practices, and student supports.
  • Participate in school improvement planning, committees, and district initiatives as assigned.
