Portland Public Schools: Dean of Students, Portland High School
Portland High School is seeking candidates who desire to work with students, their families, teachers, and staff to help students achieve success. The daily work at PHS includes mentoring students and building positive relationships, while also working with students to increase their behavioral and academic success. The Dean of Students will be highly visible throughout the day and will track student attendance and discipline, as well as work to ensure student safety. This position supports the goal of improving student outcomes by encouraging system-wide initiatives to increase student success through behavioral knowledge and positive behavior support.
The primary responsibilities include:
- Effectively manage student discipline issues in cooperation with the Principal, Counselors, and the Special Education Director.
- Member of the MTSS/PBIS team.
- Communicate with parents through various means; hold conferences as needed to discuss individual students' progress and school programs; coordinate parent activities.
- Work with administrative staff to maintain school discipline and academic plans.
- Foster a positive and productive school environment conducive to learning.
- As necessary, communicate effectively with the educational community, parents, and supplemental agencies.
- Supervise students in all areas of the building; including hallways, lunchrooms, and other areas.
- Maintain and periodically review student discipline and academic records.
- Fulfill tasks as assigned by the principal
- Coordinate or assist in coordinating other student programs, extra-curricular activities, and clubs.
- Attend school functions, and curricular, extra-curricular, and athletic activities as requested by the principal.
- Gather appropriate data to demonstrate accomplishments of the annual objectives and elements of the job description. This includes data necessary for early warning indicators (EWI), MTSS data reviews, and weekly grade and attendance data for at-risk students.
Eligible candidates must meet the following qualifications:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Broad level of skills in leadership and communication
- Strong interpersonal skills
- 3 - 5 years of teaching experience
- Experience in working with special needs students
- Outstanding proactive leadership in or out of a school setting.
- Desire and ability to motivate students, excite them about learning, and help them to reach their personal best.
- Experience using MTSS and PBIS to support student needs
- Experience using learning management systems and mentoring online learners
- Experience using and implementing restorative justice practices and processes
Position Details:
- Title: Dean of Students
- Reports to: Building Principal
- Calendar: 200 day/year, non-tenure
- Compensation: Commensurate with experience
