Job Title: Dean of Students

Summary Of Job:

The Middle School Dean of Students fosters a safe, respectful, and positive learning environment by supporting student behavior, attendance, and overall well-being. Working closely with the principal, teachers, counselors, and families, the Dean promotes a culture of accountability and student success. Key responsibilities include implementing the school''s behavior management systems, addressing student discipline, supporting restorative practices, monitoring attendance, coordinating student interventions, and building positive relationships with students and families. The Dean also assists with school supervision, safety procedures, and extracurricular activities while serving as a visible leader committed to creating an environment where every student can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Will work cooperatively with the principals and other school personnel to protect the health and welfare of the students and faculty.

  • Design and implement strategies to proactively prevent negative behavior in students, including assisting at-risk students to become connected and successful in school.

  • Serve as member in the chain of command in the absence of principal or associate principal.

  • Oversee matters of student attendance.

  • Examine and evaluate school policies and rules and make recommendations for appropriate revisions to building principals.

  • Resolve discipline problems in a fair and consistent manner, and notify parents and staff (as appropriate).

  • Assist with student orientation and PBIS (Mustang Way) programs.

  • Assist in the communication and interpretation of school and district programs, policies, and procedures to students and parents relating to attendance, discipline and safety.

  • Work cooperatively with community and government bodies on problems related to drug and alcohol abuse, and truancy.

  • Meet with parents, counselors, support services personnel, and students on matters of discipline and welfare as appropriate.

  • Assists with the development of handbooks, schedules, bulletins, etc. as delegated by the principal.

  • Assist in developing and administering practices dealing with campus control, security, and student supervision.

  • Assist in coordination and supervision of lunchtime activities.

  • Work cooperatively with the Pupil Services Department to meet students' needs and serve on PST and IEP committees as needed and perform the duties of the LEA as directed.

  • Assist in the coordination of student activities, including extra class events and programs - as appropriate, as availability allows, or as delegated by the principal.

  • Prepare information/reports related to attendance and discipline.

  • Assist where necessary to maintain complete and effective school operations.

  • Establish an effective working relationship with the Police Liaison Officer.

  • Monitor and assist with matters involving security.

  • Perform other job-related duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervising principal or Superintendent.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience: Administrator's License (Principal License)

Professional Skills:

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret course text and materials.

  • Ability to clearly communicate unit/lesson objectives and content.

  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from parents or members of the community.

  • Ability to effectively present information to peers, parents, public groups, and the community.

  • Ability to work cooperatively with peers.

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw conclusions.

Physical Abilities:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time.

  • Occasionally requires sitting for long periods and occasional balancing, stooping, and kneeling.

  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and occasionally required is the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

  • Close vision, depth perception, the ability to adjust focus, and the ability to read printed material are required.

  • Constantly required is the ability to communicate through speaking and listening to express and understand ideas and thoughts.

Work Environment:

Work is primarily performed in the main office, classroom environments, and other school locations, which typically include moderate noise from students. Work includes participating in conferences with parents regarding student progress. Work is occasionally performed outdoors in a variety of weather conditions as well.
