Summary: The mission of the Dean of Students is to develop in our students the capacity and skills to be community, college, and career ready. Functioning as a strategic blend of crisis responder and behavior systems leader, this role is pivotal in shifting school discipline from a reactive model to a proactive instructional framework. By ensuring school safety through immediate crisis stabilization and leading systemic initiatives that address root causes, the Dean of Students aims to enhance staff retention by reducing teacher burnout through the provision of predictable, structured behavioral support.

The Dean of Students serves as a primary leader within the school's response team model, synthesizing first and second responder functions to maintain a safe, high-functioning learning environment.

  • Rapid Crisis Response: Act as a primary responder to behavior calls, prioritizing immediate stabilization and the safety of all students and staff.
  • Instructional Discipline: Reteach behavior to address skill deficits and promote students'' reflection. Ensure restorative practices are implemented for long-term behavioral growth.
  • Intervention & Documentation: Utilize behavioral curriculum to facilitate targeted student lessons and interventions, ensuring behavior-reteach documentation is completed to reduce repeat incidents.
  • Overflow Support: Provide critical de-escalation support for students in crisis as needed.
  • Data-Driven Prevention: Manage Office Discipline Referral (ODR-IC) processes and track incident data to pinpoint the implementation of preventive strategies.
  • Administrative Determination: Determine administrative next steps when behavioral support requires elevated involvement, ensuring procedural integrity and the consistent application of the continuum of consequences.

The Dean of Students provides the systemic leadership necessary to foster a proactive and positive school culture.

  • Restorative Leadership: Lead PBIS Tier 1 and 2 schoolwide expectations and restorative practices to maintain a cohesive behavioral framework.
  • Structured Peer Interaction: Oversee the implementation of "Playworks" to foster positive, structured peer interactions during transitions and recess.
  • Scholar Recognition: Facilitate student recognition programs (positive behavior referrals) to reinforce a culture of excellence.
  • Collaborative Policy Development: Partner with the school principal(s) and student services staff to develop, implement, and review building-level discipline plans and policies.
  • Attendance Oversight: Coordinate and administer student attendance policies in close partnership with the School Social Worker.

A core mandate of this role is building teacher and assistant capacity to ensure a sustainable and supportive learning environment.

  • Instructional Coaching: Conduct behavior fidelity check ins to provide feedback to teachers regarding classroom management and the implementation of proactive behavior strategies, directly reducing classroom disruptions.
  • Educational Assistant (EA) Management: Oversee the professional development, evaluations, and recognition of Educational Assistants.
  • Operational Supervision: Provide feedback to EAs regarding the structure and safety of lunch and recess periods.
  • New Staff Integration: Deliver comprehensive inservice training for new staff on school procedures, student management, and the building response model.
  • Behavioral Resource: Serve as the primary resource person for identifying and solving classroom-level behavioral problems through individual and group intervention strategies.

The Dean of Students serves as a vital member of the school's leadership chain of command.

  • Special Education Representative: Serve as the Local Education Agency (LEA) representative for Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings specifically related to only speech/language (distinguished from the Principal's oversight of all other IEPs).
  • Administrative Succession: Assume principal responsibilities and act as the primary member in the chain of command during the principal's absence.
  • Disciplinary Management: Manage formal student disciplinary actions, including the oversight of suspensions and expulsions, ensuring alignment with district policy.
  • Facility & Safety Coordination: Coordinate the building emergency plan and oversee faculty supervision of hallways and school grounds.
  • Other duties as assigned by the building Principal.

Education and Experience

  • Required Certification: Current Wisconsin certification as a classroom teacher, special education teacher, guidance counselor, school social worker or school psychologist at the appropriate grade level.
  • Preferred Certification: Wisconsin School Administration or Principal certification.
  • Systemic Knowledge: Demonstrated proficiency in Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and Equitable Multi-Level Systems of Support (EMLSS).

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Expertise in classroom management, effective instruction, and scholar intervention strategies.
  • Ability to function effectively within a shared governance structure and a complex school community.
  • Demonstrated leadership in the social, emotional, and physical development of scholars.
