Job Summary

The Debate Team Activity Sponsor is responsible for organizing, supervising, and promoting the schools debate program. The sponsor will provide leadership and instruction to students participating in debate activities while fostering critical thinking, public speaking, research, and teamwork skills. The sponsor will oversee practices, competitions, and related activities in accordance with school and district policies.

Essential Functions

  • Organize, supervise, and coordinate all aspects of the schools debate program.
  • Recruit and encourage student participation in debate activities.
  • Plan and conduct regular meetings, practices, and instructional sessions.
  • Teach and develop students skills in research, argumentation, critical thinking, public speaking, and competitive debate.
  • Prepare students for local, regional, and state debate competitions.
  • Coordinate competition registration, transportation requests, and event logistics.
  • Supervise students during meetings, practices, competitions, and other debate-related activities.
  • Maintain communication with students, parents, school staff, and administration regarding schedules, expectations, and events.
  • Ensure compliance with school policies, student conduct expectations, and safety procedures.
  • Manage program resources, materials, and budget allocations as assigned.
  • Promote positive sportsmanship, citizenship, leadership, and academic achievement among participants.
  • Complete all required reports, forms, and documentation in a timely manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Principal.

Qualifications

  • Valid Indiana teaching license preferred but not required unless otherwise specified by district policy.
  • Experience in debate, speech, public speaking, coaching, or related activities preferred.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to motivate and mentor students.
  • Ability to effectively supervise students in both school and off-campus settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with students, parents, staff, and community members.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to supervise and actively engage with students during meetings, events, and competitions.
  • Ability to travel with students to competitions as needed.
  • Ability to perform duties that may require standing, walking, and speaking for extended periods.
