Consumer Debt Defense Contract Attorney

Veritas Legal Plan, Inc. is seeking an attorney licensed to practice law in Iowa to handle selected consumer debt-defense matters for referred plan members.

This is a paid, fully remote, 1099 independent-contractor opportunity for an attorney who wants to add flexible consumer debt-defense work to an existing practice. Attorneys maintain independent professional judgment and responsibility for the attorney-client relationship.

Applicants may reside anywhere in the United States but must hold an active, unrestricted Iowa law license and be in good standing with the Iowa State Bar.

Compensation is approximately $650 per accepted creditor account, on average. If an hourly rate is displayed by a job board, it represents an estimated hourly equivalent for posting purposes only. This is a flat-fee, project-based independent-contractor opportunity; compensation is paid for completed covered services, not for hours worked.

We are seeking coverage for consumer debt-defense matters throughout Iowa. Priority areas include Polk County, Linn County, Scott County, Johnson County, Black Hawk County, Woodbury County, Dubuque County, and Pottawattamie County. However, coverage is needed state wise, and attorneys choose the matters, counties, and volume of work they are available to accept.

Responsibilities

• Review referred consumer debt-collection lawsuits and related defense matters.
• Determine whether to accept representation for each referred matter.
• Communicate directly with referred plan members and provide timely, professional legal services.
• Prepare, review, sign, and file answers, notices of appearance, settlement documents, and other appropriate pleadings.
• Negotiate with creditors, debt buyers, opposing counsel, and other relevant parties.
• Handle appropriate limited-scope services, motions, discovery, settlement activity, and other case work.
• Appear remotely or in Iowa court when needed for an accepted matter.
• Maintain accurate case records and provide appropriate case-status updates.
• Comply with applicable Iowa court rules, confidentiality obligations, licensing requirements, and rules of professional conduct.

Qualifications

• Active, unrestricted license to practice law in Iowa and good standing with the Iowa State Bar.
• Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.
• Strong legal writing, communication, negotiation, organization, and client-service skills.
• Ability to independently manage accepted matters ethically and professionally.

Preferred

• Experience in civil litigation, consumer debt defense, collections, bankruptcy, consumer law, or consumer protection.
• Ability to appear in Iowa courts when needed.
• Professional liability insurance with minimum limits of $100,000 per claim and $300,000 aggregate, or willingness to obtain qualifying coverage before accepting matters.

Compensation Details

This is a paid, project-based 1099 independent-contractor role.

Compensation averages approximately $650 per accepted creditor account. Actual flat-fee compensation may vary based on the covered services required and completed for each accepted matter. Payment is issued after supporting work or filing documentation is submitted.

There are no guaranteed referrals, hours, income, benefits, or minimum caseload requirements. Referrals depend on member needs, geography, attorney availability, and the matters an attorney elects to accept. Court costs and filing fees are the responsibility of the plan member and must be received before filing when required.
