Description
The Deli Lead is responsible for supporting and overseeing daily deli operations while providing leadership, guidance, and direction to deli staff and student workers. This position ensures exceptional customer service, maintains food quality and safety standards, coordinates food preparation activities, and assists with inventory management and cash handling procedures. The Deli Lead serves as a role model for professionalism, teamwork, and operational excellence while helping create a positive dining experience for students, faculty, staff, and the public.
Examples of Duties
Leadership & Supervision
- Provide day-to-day leadership and direction to deli staff and student workers.
- Assist with training, coaching, and mentoring team members on customer service, food preparation, sanitation, and safety procedures.
- Monitor employee performance and ensure compliance with established policies and procedures.
- Assist in scheduling and assigning work duties to ensure efficient operations.
- Serve as the primary point of contact during assigned shifts and address operational concerns as they arise.
Customer Service
- Ensure customers receive prompt, professional, and friendly service.
- Assist customers with deli orders and provide accurate product information.
- Resolve customer concerns or complaints in a courteous and timely manner.
- Promote a positive customer experience by maintaining high service standards.
Language Skills
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret policies, procedures, governmental regulations, and food safety standards.
- Ability to prepare reports, correspondence, and operational documentation.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from customers, faculty, staff, students, and the public.
Food Preparation & Handling
- Prepare deli salads, sandwiches, sides, and hot food items according to established recipes and quality standards.
- Ensure food products are properly packaged, weighed, labeled, and priced.
- Monitor food quality, freshness, and presentation standards.
- Ensure compliance with all food safety, sanitation, and personal hygiene requirements.
Deli Operations
- Oversee daily deli operations to ensure efficiency, cleanliness, and organization.
- Monitor inventory levels and assist with ordering, receiving, and stocking supplies.
- Ensure proper product rotation and inventory control to minimize waste.
- Operate and oversee the safe use of deli equipment in accordance with training and established procedures.
- Maintain clean and sanitary work areas, equipment, display cases, and storage areas.
Cash Handling & Financial Accountability
- Operate point-of-sale systems and perform cash handling procedures accurately.
- Assist with cash reconciliation and balancing procedures as required.
- Ensure compliance with institutional cash handling policies and procedures.
Teamwork & Communication
- Foster a positive and collaborative work environment.
- Communicate effectively with team members, faculty, staff, students, vendors, and customers.
- Assist with inventory counts, receiving deliveries, and maintaining accurate records.
- Support departmental goals and initiatives while ensuring compliance with institutional policies, operational guidelines, and food safety regulations.
Additional Duties
- Participate in departmental meetings, training sessions, and professional development activities as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the success of the Culinary/Deli operation and the College.

- Previous deli, food service, or customer service experience preferred but not required.
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Basic math skills for weighing and pricing items.
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
- Reliable, punctual, and willing to learn.
Work Environment
- Fast-paced deli and retail setting.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting.
- Exposure to hot equipment, cold storage areas, and food allergens.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in indoor conditions and regularly works near video display.
- The noise level in the work environment in usually moderate.
- Evening and weekend hours may be required.
- May require working on a mobile feeding unit and or off campus events.
Education and/or Experience
- ServSafe Certification or the ability to obtain one within one month of the hire date
