Job Summary/Basic Functions

To provide chair side assistance to a licensed dentist and to instruct and assist dental students in four-handed dentistry.

The employee will provide chair side assistance to dentists and dental students in a variety of specialties which include but not limited to: Oral Surgery, Orthodontics, Periodontics, Endodontics, Pedodontics, Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics. The employee will work under the general supervision of the dental assistant supervisor in the sophomore, junior and senior clinic, General Practice Residency Program and the Emergency Dental Clinic at the LSUHSC School of Dentistry.

LSU Health New Orleans School of Dentistry Endodontics Department is seeking motivated applicants for the position of Dental Assistant 2.

  • Assist dentists and dental students with chair side treatment of patients.
  • Maintain and stock cabinet
  • Instruct and evaluate students in proper four-handed dentistry techniques
  • Chart patients according to LSUSD systems (Axium Computer knowledge)
  • Give fluoride treatments as directed by dentist or student
  • Give follow-up home instructions as directed by dentist or student
  • Place rubber dam and directed by dentist or student
  • Remove cement supragingivally from dental restorations and fixed restorations
  • Knowledgeable of computers.

Required Education: None

Number of years required to perform the job: 1

Type of experience required to perform the job: One year of experience or training as a dental assistant or dental hygienist.

Additional Information About This Position

This is a Civil Service Position.

Pre-employment Drug testing and Criminal Background check are required.

This position will require selected applicant to be in a probationary status for at least 6 months.

Hours of Operation: Monday-Friday 8:00 am-4:30 pm

Compensation: There is a Special Entrance Rate (SER) for Dental Assistant 2 title $15.05 with an additional $2.25 per hour worked available for candidates that hold a current DANB (Dental Assisting National Board) certification. and or additional $1.50 for EDDA certification (Expanded Dental Duty Dental Assistant). There is also an additional $1 Longevity Pay for hours worked only.
