  • Estimated Period of Performance: 01 October 2026 to 30 September 2026, with four
  • additional 12-month option years.
  • Total Compensation: $23.28 per hour.
  • Paid Time Off per Year: Up to 80 hours per year, occurring on day one.
  • Sick Leave per Year: Up to 56 hours per year, occurring on day one.
  • Paid Federal Holidays: Eleven (11) Paid Federal Holidays

Working Hours
The weekly schedule will normally consist of either five 8-hour workdays or four 10-hour workdays, Monday through Friday, excluding Federal Holidays. Work hours will normally be between 0600 and 1800, with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break. The Dental Assistant will not work more than 40 hours per week; no overtime is allowed.

Summary of Duties
The Dental Assistant will assist the dentist during dental procedures, assist in maintaining accountability and sterilization of instruments, become proficient in the Bureau Electronic Medical Records System [BEMR] (the inmate electronic medical record), conduct him/herself in a professional manner around inmates, and perform any other tasks deemed necessary by the dentist while adhering to the general practice of a dental assistant.

Qualifications

  • Must possess a High School Certificate of Graduation or GED.
  • Must have a successful completion of a 1-year dental assistant program accredited by the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation, or equivalent combinations of experience and education are qualifying.
  • Must hold current CPR certification from the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association.
  • Must have a minimum of six (6) months of experience providing Dental Assistant services.

Attire

The Dental Assistant is expected to wear professional attire appropriate to the correctional environment while on duty; business attire or scrub-type uniforms are approved. No articles of clothing worn by the Dental Assistant will be khaki tan, khaki green, tan, dark green, gray, orange, or camouflage in color or pattern. Footwear will be closed-toe, flat-bottom, and completely cover the feet; fluid resistance and non-slip soles are preferred. Protective vests will be supplied by the institution.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists the Dental Officer during restorative, oral surgery, periodontal, prosthodontic, examination, and emergency procedures by preparing treatment rooms, instruments, materials, medications, and equipment; passing instruments; retracting tissues; irrigating the oral cavities; and operating suction equipment.
  • Prepares, escorts, and positions patients for treatment; observes patient responses; provides dismissal instructions, oral health education, and follow-up appointment guidance; performs dental screenings and routine oral prophylaxis as authorized.
  • Maintains complete and accurate electronic and paper dental records, including charting, treatment documentation, periodontal charting, and radiographic records.
  • Performs authorized expanded functions, including placement and removal of temporary fillings, rubber dams, periodontal packs, application of prescribed medications and anti-cariogenic agents, fabrication support for removable prostheses, preliminary impressions, cast pouring, tooth shade selection, and placement/finishing of restorations where permitted.
  • Obtains diagnostic dental radiographs using digital and conventional imaging systems, including periapical, occlusal, panoramic, cephalometric, TMJ, and related views.
  • Positions patients, minimizes radiation exposure, processes images, performs quality assurance, and maintains infection control standards.
  • Cleans, sharpens, sterilizes, and maintains dental instruments, equipment, treatment areas, radiographic systems, and biological waste in accordance with infection control, safety, and established dental clinic policies.
