The Dental Assistant, Lead, under the direction and supervision of the Manager, Faculty Practice, is a critical member of the clinic staff, providing oversight to all daily operations and activities of the dental assistant staff. This includes training and mentoring all dental assistants, managing daily and weekly clinic schedules and staff assignments, maintaining clinical supply inventories, overseeing clinic equipment maintenance, and ensuring completeness of all patient records. The individual in this role is essential in the effort to provide the highest quality patient service in a fast-paced, multi-specialty dental clinic setting and requires leadership, diplomacy, integrity, and compassion in daily interactions with a wide range of constituencies.
Duties and Responsibilities
Assist the manager in designing and implementing training plans and documentation used to train new dental assistants and update current dental assistants with new processes, procedures, etc.
Coordinate the work of dental assistants, including training, mentoring, and motivating to achieve peak performance
Manage all staff-dentist assignments (daily and weekly) to help achieve peak effectiveness
Serve as intermediary between dentist and assistants and ensure efficiency and quality of patient service
Maintain and monitor accepted practices and care of dental equipment, instruments and supplies per MUSOD standards, and regulatory group. Coordinate repair/maintenance of equipment as needed
Manage implant systems and related treatment plans; oversee all extensive treatment plans
Provide dental assistance to dentists before, during and after treatment of patients including dental emergencies. Assist faculty with compliance to record keeping protocols related to the treatment of patients.
Order dental supplies to ensure adequate availability
Schedule and conduct daily team huddles to support communication and effectiveness
Attend meetings and other various committee meetings as required.
Act as back-up leader for Manager position when needed
Perform other duties and responsibilities as required, assigned, or requested.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
High School diploma or equivalent
Five years of dental assisting experience.
Knowledge of the full range of dental clinical specialties as defined by the American Dental Association.
Strong verbal and written communication skills as well as basic computer skills.
Excellent customer service and listening skills, discretion, flexibility, ability to work and communicate with people from a diverse population.
Ability to work independently with little supervision and constant interruptions in an environment that can be stressful.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Graduation from a Dental Assistant Program.
Supervisory experience helpful.
