Position Summary

Please Note: The salary range for this position is $52,872.00 - $62,880.00 annually, depending on qualifications, with periodic increments up to $64,512.00 annually. This is a full-time, permanent, classified, overtime-eligible position with the Pierce College District.

The Dental Clinic Support Technician (Instruction & Classroom Support Technician 2) position is responsible for supporting, managing, and documenting infection control and clinic business compliance processes. Duties include performing maintenance of dental equipment and minor repairs, as well as researching and informing the Program Director of any new laws or regulations that may affect the dental hygiene clinic. This position tracks compliance and assists in maintaining the Quality Assurance Plan and risk management processes for the dental hygiene clinic.

The role also documents equipment maintenance, completes minor repairs, and facilitates scheduling of third-party maintenance and repairs according to established procedures and techniques. In addition, the Instruction & Classroom Support Technician 2 assists the Clinic Manager with inventory and ordering of supplies, by performing inventory control functions through both manual and computerized tracking systems.

Additionally, this position oversees student compliance with sterilization of dental instruments in accordance with Pierce College Dental Hygiene Standards of Operation and applicable local, state, and federal regulatory agencies.

The Instruction & Classroom Support Technician 2 will participate actively in departmental requirements, including mandatory reporting to third-party accrediting agencies such as the Commission on Dental Accreditation, annual safety compliance, and other related responsibilities, including compliance review and program design. This position reports to the Dental Hygiene Program Director and works jointly with the Clinic Manager to ensure the effective operation of the dental clinic and laboratories. Additional duties include serving on campus or community committees as related to job responsibilities. This position requires regular and consistent attendance.

Essential Functions

The Dental Clinic Support Technician (Instruction & Classroom Support Technician 2) will be responsible for the following duties, but not limited to:

Equipment Maintenance, Repair, and Infection Control

  • Maintains, operates, cleans, tests, troubleshoots, and performs minor repairs on dental operatory, sterilization, radiology, and laboratory equipment; coordinates and tracks third-party preventive maintenance and repairs as required.

  • Receives, decontaminates, assembles, sterilizes, stores, and distributes dental instruments, equipment, and supplies in accordance with established procedures, infection control standards, and regulatory requirements.

  • Performs, documents, and evaluates equipment function testing in accordance with manufacturer recommendations, CDC guidelines, and applicable state and federal regulations; initiates corrective action for abnormal results and maintains equipment service and maintenance records.

  • Prepares and utilizes chemical solutions for equipment maintenance, disinfection, and infection control; maintains clinical areas, sink basins, dental chairs, and related equipment in a clean and sanitary condition.

  • Maintains dental unit waterlines by testing, shocking, and flushing systems in accordance with regulatory guidance and manufacturer recommendations.

  • Manages inventory and supply operations, including stocking and restocking clinical supplies, maintaining emergency carts, rotating inventory, monitoring drug and supply expiration dates, removing outdated items, and assembling specialty carts as needed.

  • Maintains inventory, maintenance, and compliance records using manual and computerized tracking systems to support equipment management, regulatory compliance, and operational readiness.

  • Prepares, segregates, and disposes of infectious waste, sharps, chemical, and other hazardous materials in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.

  • Supports clinic operations by ensuring equipment, instruments, supplies, and clinical environments remain safe, functional, compliant, and ready for patient care.

Support Risk Management

  • Serves as the departments designated Risk Manager, collaborating with the Dental Hygiene Program Director, Clinic Manager, and faculty to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations, including infection prevention and control, HIPAA, bloodborne pathogens, respiratory protection, and other health and safety requirements.

  • Monitors regulatory and policy changes affecting clinic operations; researches emerging requirements and advises the Dental Hygiene Program Director on risk, health and safety issues, policy updates, and recommended corrective or preventive actions.

  • Oversees sterilization and infection prevention and control practices by monitoring departmental sterilization processes, ensuring compliance with established standards, and providing corrective guidance for student infection control practices.

  • Provides information to students on sterilization procedures, daily equipment maintenance, equipment troubleshooting, and infection prevention and control protocols.

  • Collaborates with the Dental Hygiene Program Director and Clinic Manager to support the departments Risk Management Program, including Quality Assurance Management Plan (QAMP) activities, updates to WISHA/OSHA and Respiratory Protection plans, and implementation of risk mitigation strategies.

  • Identifies and reports discrepancies in clinical policies, procedures, or regulatory compliance to the Dental Hygiene Program Director and assists in developing and implementing corrective actions.

  • Maintains Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for all clinic, laboratory, and radiology products in accordance with applicable regulations.

  • Prepares reports and maintains documentation to support compliance, accreditation, quality assurance, and risk management activities.

  • Maintains and standardizes clinic records and forms, ensures clinical documentation supports health and safety requirements, and performs clinic opening and closing procedures for instructional operations.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education Required

  • Some college coursework in any discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

OR

  • In lieu of some college coursework, related technical experience in equipment maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, inventory management, or a dental/medical environment may be considered. Any education equivalency must be in addition to the minimum experience required for the position.

Experience Required

  • Experience in a dental, technical, or related environment demonstrating mechanical aptitude, equipment troubleshooting, repair skills, or dental assisting. Training will be provided to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair dental equipment.

Special Requirements

  • After a conditional offer of employment, the successful candidate must consent to and pass a criminal records background check. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability to perform in this position.

  • Certified in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) as a Healthcare Provider with defibrillator, or willing to be certified.

  • Ability to obtain HIPPA and HIV training certificate within first month of hire and/or already met this requirement.

  • Must provide proof of vaccination history as per the CDC Recommendations for Healthcare Providers and provide a TB test result as per current standards.

  • Must be able to wear full PPE, including medical clearance to wear an N95 Respirator for up to four continuous hours. May not have facial hair where the respirator fits to comply with fit-testing.

  • Certified by Organization for Sterilization, Asepsis and Prevention (OSAP) or ability to be certified.

  • Certified/trained, or willing to become certified/trained, in the maintenance and repair of ADEC dental chairs and other dental clinic equipment, excluding computers.

Required Competencies

  • Ability to perform meticulous and accurate work; maintain sterile environment; learn prescribed methods for establishing sterile conditions; research and critically think; communicate effectively in writing and verbally.

Terms of Employment

This is a full-time (40 hours per week) classified, overtime-eligible position with Pierce College District. This position is permanent after serving a 6-month probationary period. The primary work location will be at Pierce College, Fort Steilacoom campus. The regular work schedule is Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Work hours may be adjusted with advance notice to meet departmental, instructional, or operational needs. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required. Occasional travel for training is also required. Regular and consistent attendance is required.

Salary & Benefits

The salary range for this position is $52,872.00 - $62,880.00 annually, depending on qualifications, with periodic increments up to $64,512.00 annually.

However, your paycheck is just part of the total compensation package. There is an outstanding benefits package which is worth an additional value equivalent to about 30% of your salary. Physical Work Environment

This position works indoors in a Dental Clinic with potential exposure to microbial and chemical substances. This position requires the ability to lift items weighing up to 50 pounds, climb a ladder, bend, kneel, and reach overhead.

Retirement and Supplemental Plans

Employees also have the ability to participate in the state Deferred Compensation Program (DCP) and the State Board Voluntary Investment Program (SBVIP), administered by TIAA-CREF. Leave

Classified employees begin accruing 9.33 hours of vacation and 8 hours of sick leave starting their first month of employment. The amount of vacation an employee can accrue increases the longer they work with us (up to a maximum of 16 hours, 40 minutes per month after twenty-five years of service). A maximum of 30 working days (280 hours) of vacation may be accumulated. Employees also receive two personal leave days after four months of employment.

Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year.

Holidays

Full-time employees are entitled to ten paid holidays and a personal holiday of their choice (may be used after four months of employment).

Tuition Reimbursement

Permanent Classified employees working half-time or more may take space-available classes for $5 per quarter with the Tuition Waiver program (typically after a 6 month probationary period).
