Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:

A licensed dental hygienist in Washington State performs a variety of duties related to oral health care and preventive dental services. Their primary responsibility is to provide dental hygiene services to patients under the supervision of a licensed dentist.

MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Patient Assessment: Dental hygienists assess the oral health of patients by reviewing their medical history, performing oral examinations, and taking dental X-rays if necessary. They also check for signs of oral diseases and conditions such as cavities, gum disease, and oral cancer.
  2. Dental Cleanings: Dental hygienists perform dental cleanings, also known as prophylaxis, to remove plaque, tartar, and stains from patients' teeth. They use various tools and techniques, including scaling and polishing, to clean the teeth effectively.
  3. Oral Health Education: Dental hygienists educate patients on proper oral hygiene practices, including brushing, flossing, and diet recommendations. They provide personalized instructions and advice to help patients maintain good oral health and prevent dental problems.
  4. Application of Preventive Treatments: Dental hygienists apply preventive treatments such as fluoride varnishes and dental sealants to protect patients' teeth against cavities. They may also administer local anesthesia or nitrous oxide (laughing gas) under the direction of a dentist.
  5. Dental Charting: Dental hygienists maintain accurate dental records by charting the condition of patients' teeth and gums, recording any abnormalities or treatment provided. They also update and maintain electronic dental records as required by the dental practice.
  6. Collaboration with Dentists: Dental hygienists work closely with dentists to develop and implement treatment plans for patients. They may assist dentists during procedures, such as dental fillings or tooth extractions, and provide support by suctioning and passing instruments.
  7. Infection Control: Dental hygienists follow strict infection control protocols to maintain a safe and clean environment for patients. They sterilize dental instruments, disinfect treatment areas, and adhere to established and up to date infection control guidelines and regulations.
  8. Addresses and answers questions from tribal members and the public in group settings, community events, or outreach assignments (i.e., gives instructions, information and responds to questions).
  9. Continuing Education: Dental hygienists in Washington State are required to participate in continuing education courses to maintain their licensure. They stay updated on the latest advances in dental hygiene techniques, technologies, and regulations.
  10. Because of the Tribe’s commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.
EDUCATION - EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING FOR POSITION:
  • Washington Registered Dental Hygienist State License
  • Graduation from an accredited Dental Hygiene program
  • Clinical experience in either public or private practice two (2) year experience, four (4) years preferred.
SPECIFIC SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR POSITION:

Knowledge of Dental Anatomy, drug interactions and uses. Clinical skills: good hand-eye coordination to allow for gentle and through removal of surface deposits. Ability to assess patient needs. Documentation skills: ability to write legibly and accurately. Communication skills: excellent verbal skills with both the patients and staff. Professionalism: perform job duties in a professional manner. Demonstrates commitment to the position, which is reflected in attitude, demeanor, and appearance. Interpersonal skills: ability to work with others in a positive and team oriented manner. Organizational Skills: ability to prioritize and multi-task. Organized and gets work done in a timely manner. Problem solving/decision making ability: have the knowledge and skills to develop a treatment plan and evaluate its’ effectiveness.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Continuously works inside. Frequently sits, grasps finger (both hands), does this in a repetitive motion, foot controls, talk, hear, and see. Occasionally stand, lift, carry, bend, reaches below, above shoulder and at waist. twist and push and pulls. Rarely balance, crouch, kneel, and is exposed to extreme hot or cold temperatures, atmospheric conditions, electric shock, moving mechanical parts and toxic, caustic chemicals. Never climb, crawl, drive, work outside wet and/or humid, exposure to weather or vibration, radiation and never work with explosives.

Licenses or Certifications Required: Washington State Dental Hygienist License.
