Overview

The Sterilization Technician conducts sterilization of dental instruments including sorting, cleaning, decontaminating, and sterilizing instruments following standard procedures and techniques. The technician is responsible for inventory control, equipment and instrument maintenance, biological spore testing, and setup/breakdown of operatories. They also provide clerical duties, including, but not limited to maintaining adequate supplies and records. The technician may chair-side assist for simple dental procedures.

Key Role Responsibilities

  • Assists the dental and medical clinics with sterilization and maintaining infection control standards according to CDC, OSHA and Joint Commission requirements.
  • Demonstrates current knowledge and maintenance of dental instruments, ultrasonic equipment, and autoclave machinery
  • Monitors issues with autoclave functioning and keeps a detailed log of machine maintenance
  • Performs biological spore testing and uses chemical integrators to maintain quality infection control
  • Performs decontamination of soiled instruments, arrangement of instruments into sterilization pouches, and sterilization according to standard precautions, IFUs (instructions for use) and established protocols
  • Keeps a detailed and accurate record of sterilizations, testing and maintenance logs
  • Maintains inventory of equipment, instruments, materials and solutions
  • Restocks, labels, collects, organizes, and distributes instruments
  • Inspects, assembles and evaluates all instruments to ensure proper functioning and quality
  • Determines need for repair/replacement and validates completeness of instrument set
  • Chair-side assisting for all dental procedures as well as assisting hygienist as needed
  • Provides assistance to Fallsway as the primary site and other agency dental clinics as needed

Knowledge, Experience and Skills

Formal Education and Training

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Current BLS certification (required before hire)

Experience

  • One year of experience in a dental setting, preferred
  • Maryland X-ray license, preferred
  • Experience in a community health center or primary care setting, preferred

Skills

  • Strong organizational skills necessary to assure smooth operations of the clinic
  • Able to maintain confidentiality surrounding all information related to clients served by the clinic
  • Able to cope with interruptions, be flexible, and be a team player
  • Able to work with ill, disabled, emotionally upset and sometimes hostile individuals
