POSITION PURPOSE:

Under the supervision of the Chief Dental Officer, a Staff Dentist provides primary oral health care, assuming the responsibility of routine patient care including assessment, diagnosis and evaluation, prescribing and carrying out or directing others to carry out the appropriate treatment or referring individuals for specialty consultation or treatment in conformance with approved clinical protocols and guidelines. Provides oversight of staff hygienists and dental assistants in the absence of the Dental Director. Provides care consistent with policies and procedures of the organization.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Collaborates with immediate supervisor and clinic providers to establish, define, and refine department goals and objectives consistent with Aviva Health’s Mission and demonstrates satisfactory progress towards these goals and objectives.
  • Promotes positive customer relations and service to both internal and external customers by providing comprehensive dental services to all patients in a non-discriminatory, confidential, professional, friendly manner that builds dignity for each individual customer. Respond to co-workers’ needs and requests in a respectful, friendly, and prompt manner.
  • Performs examination, diagnosis and treatment planning for Aviva Health patients, considering and utilizing evidence-based recommendations when choosing treatment options.
  • Reviews and assesses the patient medical and oral health history, including oral health habits and disease history.
  • Orders diagnostic testing/x-rays as indicated.
  • Interprets results of diagnostic testing and plans appropriate follow-up with individual patients, with consideration given for their physical, emotional, and financial resources.
  • Includes basic principles of healthy lifestyle and oral health risk reduction with patient encounter.
  • Prescribes selective medications according to prescriptive privileges. Administers medications and injections accordingly. Instructs patient/family regarding medication and treatment directions.
  • Counsels patients regarding general oral health concerns and promotion of oral health disease prevention.
  • Documents all actions and recommendations in the patient’s electronic dental record, ensuring that the record is accurate and completely reflects the nature of the contact, the condition of the patient and the care treatment provided.
  • Demonstrates respect and sensitivity to cultural/social differences in interactions with others.
  • Ensures patient privacy by observing all HIPAA requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current unencumbered licensure in the state of Oregon to practice dentistry.
  • Holds or has the ability to obtain a current unencumbered DEA license.
  • Graduation from an accredited dental school.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of primary dental care in outpatient setting; knowledge of the principles and practices of modern dentistry as related to community health.
  • Has knowledge and skills to provide services to: children (1-12 years), adolescents (13-17 years), adults (18-64 years), geriatric (65 and older).
