Responsibilities

### Summary
The Dentist provides and supervises the complete dental care of facility detainees/inmates. Evaluates and seeks improvement in the facility dental health program, dental services provided, patient care required, administered dental operative conditions, and equipment in use. Functions as a consultant to the facility staff physician.
### Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Initiates and maintains compliance with company policies for accreditation.
- Completes an initial dental screening on all new commitments within seven (7) days.
- Evaluates those patients needing or applying for dental care and makes recommendations deemed clinically appropriate.
- Takes impressions for dental plates.
- Sends prostheses to outside dental labs.
- Formulates and creates treatment plans on an individual basis after a thorough exam.
- Performs routine cleaning, drilling, filling, and extraction of teeth in accordance with National Commission for Correctional Health Care Standards for dental care.
- Educates patients on maintaining proper oral health and prevention.
- Teaches patients about diet, flossing, use of fluoride, and other aspects of dental care.
- Prescribes pharmaceuticals, other medications, and treatment regimens to treat identified and documented dental conditions and regularly reviews those cases requiring ongoing medical/pharmaceutical attention.
- Produces clear and concise health records, reports, and correspondence, including the use of Electronic Health Records system.
- Monitors need for dental supplies and equipment.
- Provides in-service training for health staff members on appropriate issues such as dental hygiene, dental care, dental emergencies, and techniques.
- Supervises the work of professional, technical, and administrative staff members.
- Provides input into performance evaluation.
- Maintains patient confidentiality and complies with all federal and state health information privacy laws.
- Collaborates and communicates effectively with the Hospital medical team, Psychiatric Mental Health Professionals, Nurses, Health Technicians, and Administrative Assistants.
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, seminars, conferences, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies.
- Maintains a professional appearance and demeanor.
- Performs other various duties as assigned.
Qualifications

### Minimum Requirements
- Degree in dentistry from an accredited dental school
- Licensed to practice as a registered dentist in the state in which the facility is located
- Professional license must remain on file at all times at the facility where services are rendered
- Must be able to deal effectively with difficult detainees/inmates and staff at times
- Demonstrate the ability to adjust medical techniques to accommodate the needs of the specialized population of the correctional setting
- This includes communication between medical staff and detention staff about the care of detainees while understanding and adjusting for the unique security issues of the facility.
