Job Title: Department Manager, Customs Brokerage
Location: Arlington Heights, IL (Hybrid – 3 Days In Office / 2 Days Remote)
Employment Type: Direct Hire
Pay Type: Exempt
Salary Range: $105,000 – $120,000 annually
Bonus: Eligible for annual discretionary bonus
Schedule: Monday – Friday | 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM
Work Week: 35 hours per week

Overview

Wheeler Staffing Partners is seeking an experienced Department Manager, Customs Brokerage for a direct hire opportunity in Arlington Heights, IL. This leadership role is responsible for overseeing import and export customs operations, ensuring compliance with U.S. Customs regulations, managing departmental performance, and maintaining exceptional client service standards.

The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership capabilities, extensive customs brokerage expertise, and hands-on experience with CargoWise. Candidates must hold an active U.S. Customs Broker License or have passed the exam and applied for licensure.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee end-to-end import and export customs brokerage operations in coordination with the forwarding department
  • Ensure compliance with all U.S. Customs and Border Protection regulations, tariff classifications, import/export restrictions, and documentation requirements
  • Review and approve customs entries for accuracy, duty calculations, and regulatory compliance
  • Manage ISF (Importer Security Filing) processes and resolve entry-related issues promptly
  • Serve as the primary liaison with U.S. Customs officials, responding to inquiries and resolving compliance matters
  • Stay current on international trade regulations, customs requirements, and trade agreements
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships while ensuring high levels of customer satisfaction
  • Manage departmental budgets, resource allocation, operational efficiency, and cost-saving initiatives
  • Implement and maintain supply chain security programs, including CTPAT and government compliance requirements
  • Develop, maintain, and optimize SOPs and KPIs for operational performance
  • Support business development initiatives for both new and existing customer accounts
  • Provide operational, regulatory, and systems training to team members while fostering employee development
  • Prepare and report on departmental revenue generation, profit, and loss performance
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Qualifications
  • Active U.S. Customs Broker License required
  • Candidates who have passed the Customs Broker Exam and applied for licensure will also be considered
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Logistics, or related field preferred
  • Equivalent combination of education and at least 5+ years of customs brokerage experience considered in lieu of degree
  • Minimum 5–7 years of management experience within customs brokerage or customs operations
  • Strong knowledge of customs clearance procedures, import/export regulations, and compliance standards
  • Proficiency in CargoWise Customs Entry System required

Physical Requirements and Work Environment
  • Work is performed in a standard office environment with a generally quiet noise level
  • Frequent sitting, typing, and use of hands and arms required

  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds occasionally
  • Must possess close vision and ability to adjust focus
  • Ability to read, perform simple mathematical calculations, and manage moderate levels of workplace stress
  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and comprehend fluent English
