Description

Deputy Bailiff

Security Deputy Bailiff is a law enforcement officer authorized by statute to provide the physical enforcement to execute all journalized court orders, service of court documentation, detain and process all individuals remanded and having verified outstanding warrants at any place within this state, provided that venue and subject matter jurisdiction are present. Detain all individuals involved in criminal acts upon court property for review, investigation, and charging of offense(s) by the city's prosecutor and police department. Provide safety and security to the Court, its employees and the public in which it serves.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide security for the Court.
  • Secure Court sessions by providing protection and assistance for Court personnel and the public.
  • Obtain the necessary documentation to execute Court orders.
  • Provide any service to assist the Judge or Magistrate in conducting Court sessions and any necessary services to insure the daily operation of the Bailiff's Department.
  • Responsible for enforcing orders of the Court through service of Court papers and clerical processing of said documents, including but not limited to garnishments, attachments, examination aids, contempt citations, and criminal warrants, summonses and subpoenas.
  • Provide quality service that continuously improves, that meets or exceeds public expectations, and that ensures all are treated with courtesy, dignity, and respect.

Minimum Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS and ABILITIES

  • Must be eligible and able to pass Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA), during the 180 day work testing period.
  • Valid Ohio Driver's License and proof of current liability insurance.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize duties.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school graduate or equivalent required. The completion of at least two years of full-time post secondary education at an accredited college or university is preferred. In the alternative, two years of experience providing security in a court system or as a law enforcement officer, as that term is defined by the Ohio Revised Code.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Because the primary function of a Security Deputy Bailiff is security and may involve physical contact, it is imperative that all deputies are physically able to meet the physical demands of the job including, but not limited to, the ability to stand, or walk at least six (6) hours per day, and the ability to push and pull up to 75 pounds and lift at least fifty (50) pounds at any given time.

COURT EXPECTATIONS of EMPLOYEE

In accomplishing the responsibilities of this position, the Court expects that the employee will adhere to the mission and values of the Court as well as all Court policies and procedures. In addition, while carrying out the duties of this position, the employee is expected to model high ethical conduct on and off the job, and exhibit a professional and respectful demeanor with all Court employees. Qualified applicants may be required to submit to testing and provide writing samples. Proof of education and employment references will be required before final interview. Employment predicated upon successful completion of criminal record check and drug testing required. Youll be considered a probationary employee for your first 180 days of employment.
