Function

Join the Hampton Sheriff's Office in a key leadership role responsible for supervising correctional facility operations during an assigned shift. The Lieutenant provides operational oversight, leads Sergeants and Deputies, and helps ensure a safe, secure, and professional environment for inmates, staff, and the public. This position plays a critical role in maintaining compliance with applicable laws, standards, and agency policies while supporting efficient daily operations.

Typical Task:

  • Supervise Sergeants and Deputies during assigned shifts
  • Oversee daily correctional operations and inmate supervision
  • Conduct facility inspections, review reports, and ensure compliance
  • Lead emergency response efforts and critical incident management
  • Train, mentor, and evaluate staff performance
  • Manage staffing schedules, assignments, and operational readiness
  • Ensure adherence to policies, accreditation standards, and legal requirements
  • Maintain safety, security, and order within the facility

Minimum requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in criminal justice, social science, administration, or a related field.
  • An equivalent combination of education and directly related experience may be considered instead of the preferred degree.
  • A minimum of four (4) years of supervisory experience in a correctional or law enforcement environment.
  • Must successfully pass a background investigation before employment or promotion.
  • This position is safety sensitive and subject to alcohol and controlled substance testing in accordance with City policy.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record based on City of Hampton criteria.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must qualify to carry and use firearms pursuant to §53.1-29 of the Code of Virginia and DCJS standards.
  • The incumbent may be considered "essential personnel" during citywide emergencies or at the direction of the City Manager or designee, which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
