WHO WE ARE

The mission of the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office is the law enforcement arm of the Judicial System. WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

The Sheriff's Office is currently recruiting individuals who have prior experience as a certified law enforcement officers in the State of Maryland, to fill open positions as sworn Deputy Sheriff at the rank of Deputy Sheriff I (DS1). The Sheriff's Office Lateral Program will allow for equivalency of up to nine (9) years of qualified experience to be considered for compensation determinations upon hire. Lateral applicants who have successfully completed a Maryland Police Training and Standards Commission (MPTSC) Entry Level Training Academy will not need to attend another entry level training academy program if they have a valid MPTSC certification within the past three (3) years. This recruitment will be used to fill positions beginning immediately.

Prior to appointment, candidates must successfully complete an oral interview, background investigation, polygraph, physical, psychological, drug and alcohol screening.

What Youll Be Doing

The work environment of a Deputy Sheriff is divided between field work (serving civil process papers, transporting prisoners and citizens, returning prisoners from out of County/State and maintaining custody of prisoners in a small detention setting) and time spent in a courtroom providing prisoner and courtroom security.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience: Satisfactory completion of the Maryland Police Training Commission prescribed course of Entry Level Training. Satisfactory completion of the Maryland Police Training Commission and Standards Commission or a previously certified police officer in Maryland if it has been three (3) years or less since the applicant was certified as a police officer.

Education: Completion of High School or High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland.

Citizenship: Must be a United States Citizen

Age Requirements: Must be 21 years of age as of the first day of employment as a sworn Deputy Sheriff I.

License: Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid Class "C" (or equivalent) driver's license from the applicant's state of residence.

Leave Benefits

Our generous leave package starts with non-MLS permanent and term employees earning 15 days of sick leave and 15 days of annual leave in their first year, as well as up to three additional personal days each calendar year. Positions in MLS earn 35 days of paid time off each year. In addition, we offer all employees 10 paid holidays. Retirement Benefits

All permanent and term positions are eligible for robust retirement plans. Public safety positions are eligible for a defined benefit pension plan in which they are vested after only five years. Employees in non-public safety positions can participate in retirement plans that contribute up to 12 percent of their annual salary. All employees can also participate in a supplemental retirement plan, the 457 Deferred Compensation Plan, to contribute even more to their retirement goals.

Montgomery County employees are eligible to participate in the Federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. Participants who meet all requirements may qualify for forgiveness on the remaining balance on their Direct Loans after making 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan while working full-time in a qualifying public service position.
