    Deputy Sheriff - McLean County Sheriff's Department

    Starting Salary: $$70,835.35/year plus overtime when available

    Position Summary

    This is general duty work of moderate difficulty in the enforcement of law, maintenance of order, prevention of crime, and protection of life and property.

    Work involves responsibility for the protection of life and property, prevention of crime, apprehension of criminals, and the general enforcement of laws and ordinances in a designated area on an assigned shift.

    Successful completion of the State mandated Police Training Academy is required during the first six months of employment, or as soon as such training can be reasonably scheduled.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Patrols an assigned area for the prevention of crime and enforcement of laws and ordinances.
    • Checks doors, windows, and premises of businesses establishments and personal residences and investigates any suspicious conditions, activities, or persons.
    • Responds to requests for police services and takes appropriate action.
    • Arrests violators of laws and ordinances.
    • Accompanies prisoners to headquarters, jail, or court.
    • Testifies in court as arresting officer.
    • Watches for and investigates stolen property and wanted or missing persons.
    • Enforces traffic laws, issues Citations, and arrests violators.
    • Provides general information and advice on laws and ordinances to the public.
    • Assists other agencies in follow-up work on traffic, criminal offenses, location of wanted suspects, traffic direction at accident scenes and fire scenes, provides assistance in the restraint and handling of certain mental patients as required.
    • Participates in crime prevention programs; public relations programs.
    • Maintains order in crowds and at public gatherings; provides first aid to injured parties.
    • Maintains records and prepares reports.
    • Uses patrol car, radio, computer terminal, revolver, first aid kit, and fire extinguisher.
    • Serves legal documents and other civil papers.
    • Investigates and determines the location of individuals who are evading service.
    • Uses camera, radio, typewriter, and other peripheral department equipment.
    • Performs related work as required.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • Knowledge of the geography of the county and the location of areas requiring special police services.
    • Ability to understand and carry out detailed oral and written instructions.
    • Ability to prepare clear and concise reports.
    • Ability to enforce the law with firmness, tact, and impartiality.
    • Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies.
    • Ability to learn the proper methods of operating and maintaining firearms.
    • Manual ability to write reports, correspondence, etc.
    • Manual ability to manipulate Small objects with precision and operate light equipment.
    • Ability to operate a vehicle and possess valid Illinois driver's license.
    • Ability to work outside in all weather conditions.
    • Ability to hear and understand spoken communication with other individuals in person and using a telephone or radio.
    • Cognitive ability to exercise independent judgement and initiative.
    • Cognitive ability to perform complex and varied tasks.

    Eligibility Requirements

    Certified employee candidates must meet the following requirements. However, one or more of the requirements may be waived at the discretion of the Commission according to the law. The Sheriff of McLean County shall appoint as certified employees only those persons who have been certified to him, in writing, by this Commission as being eligible for appointment. The requirements are as follows:

    • Be no younger than 20 years of age at the time their application is received by the Commission. However, applicants will not be considered for a permanent position until they have attained 21 years of age.
    • Have a minimum vision of 20/40 in each eye, without corrective lenses, corrected to 20/20.
    • Be free of color blindness as demonstrated by successfully passing the test known as the H-R-R Pseudo Isochromatic Plates produced by the Instrument Division of the American Optical Company.
    • Be a high school graduate or have certification or equivalent formal education.
    • Have successfully completed all testing procedures as the Commission may prescribe from time to time.
    • Be acceptable to the Commission on oral interview.
    • Pass a background investigation.
    • Pass a pre-employment polygraph test.
    • Have a valid Illinois driver's license at the time of examination.
    • Attend the mandatory orientation meeting as the Commission may prescribe. (Amended 7-11-00)
    • Submit to medical and psychological tests as the Commission may prescribe. (Amended 7-11-00)
    • Be a citizen of the United States.
    • Must be a resident of Illinois for 1 year prior to the appointment.
    • Must be a person of good moral character and reputation. No applicant shall have been previously convicted of a felony offense or crime of moral turpitude under the laws of Illinois or any other state.
    • Preference will be given to persons who have honorably served in the military or Naval Service of the United States.
    • Employees may reside within a 45 mile radius of the McLean County Sheriff's Office.

    Physical Attributes/Demands

    • Physical strength and agility and freedom from disabling defects; and ability to meet such specific physical requirements as may be established by competent authority.
    • Visual ability to read written reports and correspondence.
    • Visual ability to read and operate standard office equipment such as word processors, copy machines, printers, etc.
    • Visual ability to operate vehicles during day and night hours.
    • Ability to physically restrain persons in the course of law enforcement activities.
    • Ability to pursue individuals on foot (i.e.; run) in the course of law enforcement activities.
    • Ability to lift and/or move heavy objects and/or persons in the course of rescue activities.
