Position Overview

The primary purpose of the Detention Center Transportation Deputy is the safe and secure transportation of inmates throughout the state and outside the state. This employee would transport to and from various courts, jails, prisons, prison camps, medical centers, parole offices and other specific locations while maintaining and performing continuous custody duties.

Work Schedule:

Typical work schedule is Monday-Friday

Normal Work Hours:

7:30 am- 4:30 pm Monday-Friday. Hours may vary depending on pre-determined route and transport needs.

Examples of Duties

  • Transporting inmates to and from court, medical appointments, and other locations.
  • Maintaining security during the transport of inmates, including the use of physical restraint and force as needed.
  • Communicating with management and court officials regarding inmate status and transport procedures.
  • Completing reports regarding unusual incidents that occur during the transport of inmates.
  • Maintaining regular communication with dispatch centers and preparing necessary paperwork related to inmate transport.
  • Performing work under specific and definite directions and well-known procedures, often under the supervision of a supervisor.
  • Interacting with the public, court officials, and other law enforcement employees, both inside and outside the organization. These duties require a high level of initiative, independent judgement, and direction, as well as the ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written forms. The role also involves the exercise of physical fitness and the ability to operate a variety of machinery and equipment, including forearms and restraint devices.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of the Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) certificate program. Additionally, candidates must have completed the minimum requirements established by the North Carolina Sheriffs Training and Standards Commission for certified law enforcement officers.

Must be a United States Citizen, be at least 20 years of age, have a high school diploma or GED and a valid North Carolina drivers license. Must be able to pass a comprehensive background investigation which includes, but not limited to, criminal background check, physical abilities test, polygraph testing, medical exam, drug-screen, and psychological screening. Live within 60 nautical miles radius of Cumberland County Sheriffs Office.

  • Employee must be able to work on their own with minimum supervision.
  • The officer needs to understand the occupational hazards and safety precautions required to perform their duties.
  • Position must understand the operational organization of the Detention Center and of the Sheriff's Office.
