You have plenty of career options, and we understand that. But we hope you'll take a close look at what it's like to work with the State of Montana's Department of Administration. Our team succeeds because we build real, meaningful working relationships grounded in trust, respect, and collaboration.

We're committed to helping you grow, challenge yourself, and do work that truly matters. And we work just as hard to create an environment where you can thrive-professionally and personally.

What is this career opportunity?

The Architecture & Engineering Division (A&E) is seeking a sharp, solutions‑driven professional with a background in architecture, engineering, or construction to join our Design team. You'll report directly with in-house architects, engineers, and a seasoned construction management team.

In this role, you'll take the lead on design‑phase delivery for state projects-from selecting top‑tier consultants to shaping concepts, planning space, developing programs, estimating costs, preparing construction documents, and overseeing bidding. Your project portfolio will span everything from strategic remodels and deferred maintenance to major renovations and new building construction.

You'll be the driving force behind project coordination, bringing together end users, agency leaders, and design consultants to develop clear, practical, and cost‑effective solutions that help Montana agencies work better and serve the public more effectively.

(You can learn more about the Division here.)

In this position you will be afforded the opportunity to telework, however there will be required weekly in-office day(s) in Helena. Specific conditions will be outlined as part of the job offer and must adhere to state policy.

What are we looking for?

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Architecture, plus three years of project management experience working with construction documents and construction methods
  • Even better if you hold (or are actively pursuing) professional licensure as an Architect or Engineer.
  • Alternate combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Competencies:

Knowledge of:

  • Core principles and best practices across architectural, civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering
  • Effective project administration and contract management strategies

Ability to:

  • Deliver outstanding, professional customer service
  • Communicate with clarity, tact, and diplomacy
  • Juggle multiple projects while staying laser‑focused on priorities
  • Work seamlessly with others to achieve shared goals
  • Use sound judgment and discretion to build strong, lasting working relationships
  • Communicate confidently and professionally-both in writing and in person
  • Bring diverse stakeholders together and build true consensus
  • Spot problems, emerging trends, and issues early-and craft smart, proactive solutions

Does this sound like you?

Please tell us how and why by submitting your resume, cover letter, and three professional business references.
