JOB DESCRIPTION

Explain what the scope of the work/project is? Project Overview, deliverables (what is this person responsible for). Project Overview: The project involves converting a turbine generator into a synchronous condenser. This process includes updating the control systems from physical control panels to a distributed control system (DCS). Designer II will play a crucial role in this transformation by working on electrical schematics and wiring diagrams. Deliverables: Designer II will be responsible for: Understanding Existing Schematics: Analyzing the current electrical schematics and wiring diagrams. Redrawing Schematics: Converting existing image files of schematics into vector format. Designing New Schematics: Creating new schematics for the updated control systems to ensure they are compatible with the DCS. Execution: Assisting in the design and execution of the project, ensuring all electrical connections and controls are accurately represented and functional. This role requires familiarity with electrical schematics, wiring, and connection diagrams, and the ability to design, draw, and execute the necessary changes for the project.

What are the top 3-5 skills and qualifications (technology/application/software, etc.) required? –Engineering or Electrical Experience: 5-7 years of previous engineering or electrical experience is preferred. Flexibility for less experience if the candidate has a strong understanding of electrical schematics and design. Technical

Skills: AutoCAD and MicroStation: Proficiency in these software tools is essential for redrawing and designing electrical schematics. Electrical Aptitude: Strong understanding of electrical concepts, schematics, wiring diagrams, and connection diagrams. Motor Control Experience: Experience with motor control systems is beneficial. Industrial Background: Experience in industrial settings, particularly with companies like 3M, Client, or other utilities, is valuable. Drafting and Designing Experience: Ability to draft and design electrical schematics, including converting image files into vector format and creating new designs for updated control systems. Control Systems Knowledge: Familiarity with PLC, TCS, or DCS control systems, as Xcel uses DCS for their operations. Experience with any of these systems is acceptable. Overall, the ideal candidate should have a blend of technical skills, industrial experience, and proficiency in drafting and designing electrical schematics using AutoCAD and MicroStation.

2. What non-technical skills are necessary (i.e., such as communication, problem solving, team player)? Strong attention to detail, strong communication skills, sense of humor. Resource should be a self starter and encompass a proactive mindset.

3. Ideal candidate background and how many years required? Industrial background and experience with motor control.

4. Are there any specific companies you like to see on a candidate's resume? Candidates with experience from the following types of companies are preferred: Architectural Engineering Firms: Experience from firms specializing in architectural engineering is highly valued. Industrial Companies: Companies like 3M or Client are particularly relevant due to their industrial background and expertise. Utilities: Experience with other utility companies is also beneficial, as it aligns well with the nature of the project and the work environment at Xcel Energy. These companies are preferred because they typically provide the relevant experience and skills needed for the Designer II position, particularly in electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and industrial design.

Creates, updates and revises sketches, working drawings and contract documents using Computer Assisted Design (CAD) software or manual means of drafting to meet customer requirements. Prepares 2D and 3D models. Must be able to read and comprehend detailed customer requirements, data sheets and supplier specifications. Assignments will be completed utilizing information provided by project engineering, architectural, or technical services staff under the direction of a supervisor. Requires familiarity with drafting techniques and engineering concepts and terminology. Able to read engineering drawing and blueprints. Prepares documentation to support design drawings. Prepare bills of material, schedules, and assist engineering personnel with formal drawing transmittals and construction issues.
