Role: Designer
Position Type: Full-Time Contract (40hrs/week)
Contract Duration: Long Term
Work Schedule: 8 hours/day (Mon-Fri)
Location: 100% Onsite - Anywhere in Chesapeake, VA

Overview
The Designer / Design Technician will work closely with engineering, right-of-way, land survey, and permitting teams to support utility and grid hardening projects. The role focuses on reviewing and modifying existing electrical distribution drawings using AutoCAD Automated Utility Design (AUD) to reflect real-world field conditions, asset replacements, and system updates.

Key Responsibilities
  • Modify and update existing utility and electrical distribution drawings in AutoCAD AUD.
  • Review field data and determine what assets require replacement, removal, or modification.
  • Support engineering and permitting teams by preparing accurate, high-quality plan graphics.
  • Complete mark-ups, plan set-ups, and documentation for submittals.
  • Maintain established QA/QC processes and drawing standards.
  • Communicate clearly with internal teams regarding specifications and design updates.
  • Assist with report graphics preparation and documentation tracking.
  • Conduct field visits as required to support project needs, including site assessments and data collection. This role requires regular driving to various project locations; therefore, a valid driver's license and the ability to operate a motor vehicle are required.
  • All other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • At least 1 year of recent experience using AutoCAD or formal AutoCAD coursework/training.
  • Strong technical aptitude and problem-solving ability.
  • Basic understanding of math concepts and ability to use Excel.
  • Willingness to learn utility-specific systems and electrical distribution concepts.
  • Ability to interpret existing drawings and apply updates accurately.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with AutoCAD Automated Utility Design (AUD).
  • Basic familiarity with ArcGIS or ArcFM concepts.
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in CAD, Design, Engineering, Architecture, or a related field.
  • Background in technical fields such as coding (e.g., C++, Java) or highly technical design environments.
  • Experience preparing permit drawings or working with utilities or telecommunications projects.
