NWS executes and manages a wide range of technical services such as environmental investigation and restoration, construction, demolition, radioactive and hazardous waste management, public communication/involvement, information management, health and safety, industrial hygiene, and emergency response/HAZMAT services.

North Wind Services is actively seeking individuals who can contribute to national security within the science, technology, and engineering fields as part of our supplemental labor team at vital federal research and development installations supporting the Department of Energy. Qualified applicants must be a US citizen, at least 18 years of age, and able to meet pre-employment requirements including any required physicals, drug screen, and/or background investigation to satisfy clearance requirements from the Department of Energy.

Successful candidates will be employees of NWS supporting the missions of their federal client, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in Livermore, CA. Pay, benefits, Human Resources, and employment management functions are all provided by NWS. As an NWS employee working at LLNL, within the client's environment, you will complete day-to-day tasks, with direction from technical personnel directly employed by LLNL.

The National Ignition Facility and Photon Science (NIF&PS) Directorate has an opening for qualified Architectural Designer/Drafter. Successful candidates must have moderate to high ability in past design projects and positions, being able to demonstrate from conception to completion of medium to large scale or complex projects. This role requires a versatile, broad-based Architectural or Structural Designer/Drafter who can develop facility design and installation projects within the National Ignition Facility and Photon Sciences Directorate (NIF&PS), either independently or in collaboration with engineers from various disciplines.

NIF is a state-of-the art, one-of-a-kind facility that requires fast-paced, highly skilled, and trained employees. NIF is seeking to enhance its core staff with people who can lead future architectural/structural design and engineering efforts as NIF continues its scientific journey through operations in its experimental facility. These architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical systems require technical skills to work on sophisticated designs.  NIF provides the scientific community with an unprecedented capability for studying materials at extreme pressures, temperatures, and densities, and it is supported by a wide variety of support facilities. You will be responsible for providing technical design/drafting support for new facility systems to build new or reconfigured labs and other facility spaces, as well as maintenance, operations, repairs, and upgrades to existing systems. The successful candidate will have opportunities to work on the entire lifecycle of Architectural, Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, and other facility systems.

This position may require the successful candidate to have the flexibility to work overtime to accomplish goals. The successful candidate will be required to pass various on-site training modules to pursue work assignments. The successful candidate is required to give a presentation that demonstrates essential and required duties and skills, knowledge, and abilities. This presentation is required at the time of the interview.

Essential Duties
- Provide Drafting/Design support for moderately complex to complex facility design and installation of new facility systems as well as maintenance, operations, repairs, and upgrades of existing systems.
- Contribute to the design of moderately complex to complex projects from the conceptual phase through construction oversight, including interior and exterior design based on customer requirements and vision.
- Utilize broadly defined engineering concepts, practices, codes, and procedures including development of drawings, visualizations, and presentations.
- Update drawings provided by architects and engineers within multiple design and CAD tools.
- Interact with multi-discipline internal team of architects, mechanical, electrical, and structural engineers for design and construction.
- Participate in performing field inspections, measurements, and calculations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- AS degree in Architectural, Structural, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or a related technical field, or the equivalent combination of education and/or relevant experience.
- Working knowledge of commercial architectural, mechanical, electrical and facility system design and understanding of engineering principles.
- Willingness to learn procedures, work control, and/or configuration management.
- Applied knowledge and experience with relevant moderately complex to complex mechanical and architectural concepts, practices, codes, and procedures within commercial industry.
- Proficient knowledge and experience using Revit and AutoCAD.
- Willingness to work effectively in a dynamic and multidisciplinary environment, which includes working with architects, engineers, technicians, and other designers and recommending solutions to a diverse range of issues.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.

Desired Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Develop complex architectural, mechanical and electrical designs and attend informal and formal design reviews.
- Provide technical input on tasks and projects and participate in internal technical/advisory committees.
- Proficient knowledge and expertise with architectural, mechanical, electrical and facility systems, including in-depth knowledge of standards and applicable building codes.
- Intent to pursue a California certificate of registration as a Professional Engineer (PE), or a Licensed Architect.
- Intent to pursue Project Management Professional (PMP), or equivalent certification.
- Experience with NFPA, SMACNA, and other industrial facility codes.

Special Requirements
Pre-Placement Medical Exam: A job-related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Anticipated Government Clearance Level: Q (position will be cleared to this level). Applicants who are selected will be subject to a federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matters. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
