Job Description

The Desk Operations Student Lead (DOL) is a student leadership position with a high degree of responsibility in the area of front desk operations management. The overall role of the DOL is to meet the needs of residents within the residence halls, including, but not limited to, the general supervision of the residence hall front desks; representing full-time administration in their absence; assisting Desk Attendants in daily operations, guest services, building and mail security, emergency procedures, managing and upkeeping inventory; and maintaining the cleanliness of the residence hall lobbies, desk, mailroom, and storage rooms. Staff in this position will mainly work evenings and weekends.

Desk Operations Student Leads are required to work during campus holidays and closures, with the exception of Thanksgiving, Winter, and Spring Break. This includes days such as Labor Day, Veterans Day, and MLK Jr. Day.

This appointment also requires that you attend the following paid mandatory orientation and training sessions:

  • Orientation/Onboarding: To be scheduled upon hiring. Your Desk Operations team will reach out to notify you of the date, time, and location of training.
  • Spring 2027 Training: Training is mandatory and is scheduled for January 15, 2027*.
  • Dates are subject to change.

Essential Functions

  • Work collaboratively with the student and full-time staff to ensure the successful and smooth operation of the residence hall front desks. Consistently accommodate all guests at the front desk. Provide a detailed report to supervisor of all activities and events that occur during shifts, and recap in a nightly report.
  • Provide excellent customer service to all MU Housing residents and visitors by being welcoming and approachable. This includes greeting people when they walk into the hall, smiling, verbally and physically acknowledging people, and taking the initiative to be friendly. Have intentional interactions with residents within the hall and build a relationship with them.
  • Assist in developing a competent and motivated desk staff by providing leadership in a positive and professional manner while encouraging an educational work environment. Participate in interviewing and selecting student staff. Assist with or conduct training, staff development, performance reviews, recognition recommendations, conflict mediation, and other delegated duties.
  • Facilitate coverage and/or cover the front desks when needed. Perform rounds to assigned desks during each Desk Operations Student Lead shift.
  • Greet and be available to facilitate needs of residents, guests, and Desk Attendants; answer various questions; troubleshoot resident problems; and promote MU Housing programs and services.
  • Deliver misdirected packages to the appropriate desks. Troubleshoot issues with packages and other mail.
  • Deliver mail to non-operational mail rooms.
  • Be a brand ambassador for MU Housing and the University of Missouri. Have knowledge of MU Housing and Student Affairs to be an exceptional resource. Refer students to resources on campus.
  • Maintain all inventories for the desk, back room, and lobby. Aid in the assessment of facilities and services within MU Housing.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Actively participate in regular weekly, bi-weekly, and monthly MU Housing Desk Operation meetings by providing input and feedback to the team and supervisors concerning operations of the residence hall front desks.
  • Attend and participate in periodic training sessions scheduled by the department.
  • May be assigned mail shifts to sort and distribute mail/packages at each operational desk.
  • As with all positions, involvement with other duties and responsibilities is expected in order to serve and maintain our departmental and Student Affairs mission.

Anticipated Hiring Range

$16.40 per hour, paid on a bi-weekly basis

Shift

Average number of hours per week: 20

Shifts: Weekdays between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m.; weekends between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m.

This position requires evening and weekend hours supporting activities and programs within the department. Occasionally division and campus projects may require additional hours outside of your normal schedule.

Minimum Qualifications

To be eligible for a student title, an individual must be enrolled at the University of Missouri. Enrollment in the summer session is not required if the student was enrolled in the Spring semester and is pre-enrolled for the Fall semester. Selection is contingent upon results of a review with the Office of Institutional Equity, Office of Student Accountability & Support, Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, previous MU appointment history, and reference checks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher.
  • Be a second-year student or above.
  • Current or prior MU Housing Desk Attendant experience.
  • Ability to work during intersessions.
  • Prior supervisory/leadership experience with proven abilities to lead and direct a group of individuals, including conflict resolution and positive reinforcement.
  • Prior work experience displaying strong evidence of initiative, responsibility, and professionalism
  • Strong leadership skills demonstrated through previous academic or work-related experiences
  • Due to the nature of the position, there is a strong preference for applicants who live on campus
