The position is part of the joist and deck design team based in Fort Wayne, IN, working on multiple projects at various stages and using a proprietary AutoCAD add-in that will be taught during training.

Responsibilities

  • Develop complete manufacturing plans for structural steel joist and deck systems to ensure products can be fabricated and delivered according to customer requirements.
  • Use a proprietary AutoCAD 2D add-in (training provided) to support efficient and standardized detailing processes.
  • Work on 5-6 projects simultaneously at different stages of completion, managing priorities and deadlines effectively.
  • Collaborate closely with internal teams, including team leads, checkers, and other detailers, to review drawings and ensure quality and accuracy.
  • Coordinate with customers and fabrication plants throughout the design approval process, addressing questions, clarifications, and design changes as needed.
  • Assist with problem solving related to structural loads, connections, and decking design to ensure safe and efficient structures.
  • Participate in drawing reviews with the team lead and checker to verify compliance with standards, accuracy, and constructability.
  • Support project delivery by tracking progress, meeting project deadlines, and maintaining organized documentation for each project.
  • Engage in training and development activities by reworking completed projects to learn the company's detailing standards, processes, and project management approach.
  • Adapt quickly to changing day-to-day tasks and priorities, contributing to a collaborative and flexible team environment.
  • Maintain high levels of accuracy and quality in all drawings and documentation and be accountable to defined metrics and performance expectations.
  • Provide and receive constructive feedback within the team to continuously improve processes, quality, and efficiency.
  • Demonstrate strong organization and multitasking skills to handle multiple projects and deadlines without compromising quality.

Essential Skills

  • AutoCAD drafting experience within a related industry such as construction, building design, or structural detailing.
  • Ability to create detailed 2D drawings and convert customer drawings into clear, buildable plans.
  • Understanding of structural loads and connections, including the ability to review decking design drawings and connection details.
  • Familiarity with design approval processes and experience working with clients or fabrication plants through approval cycles.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously.
  • Flexibility to adjust quickly to changing priorities and day-to-day tasks while maintaining collaboration with team members.
  • Comfort with being held accountable to metrics, results, and the accuracy and quality of drawings.
  • Goal-oriented and deadline-driven mindset, with a strong focus on meeting project deadlines.
  • Ability to give and receive feedback constructively in a team environment.
  • Capacity to adapt to the company's culture and collaborative attitude.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with joist and/or decking design in a structural steel environment.
  • Any prior experience working with structural steel joist and deck systems.
  • Experience in leadership, mentoring, or training within a drafting or detailing team.
  • Interest in long-term career growth within a large, stable organization that offers internal mobility across teams and groups.
  • Motivation to pursue additional education or training, supported by tuition reimbursement and scholarship opportunities.
