Position Summary

The Brooklyn Park Police detention officer books and releases arrested inmates/persons for Brooklyn Park and other agencies. The detention officer maintains paperwork, statistics and records. The detention officer maintains the jail facility to include security, access and egress of control, cleanliness, inventory, and inspections. The detention officer maintains the care of in-custody of inmates/persons. They provide assistance in special circumstances and/or emergency situations. The detention facility operates 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.

The detention officer works a rotating schedule of 12-hour shifts that will primarily include overnights. Detention officers also work weekends and holidays. Once training is completed, this detention officer will work a rotating schedule of four days on, four days off, and most likely night shift hours. Detention officers bid for their shift based on seniority.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct searches, book inmates, maintain property inventory, take photographs, fingerprint, identify, and supervise arrested persons. Assists with determining bail.
  • Maintain jail paperwork, arrest records, court system records, and daily logs.
  • Maintain jail security of property and facility, access and egress control, cleanliness of facility, inventory of inmate supplies, and inspections.
  • Maintain care and custody of inmates, including monitoring activities and records. Provide meals and showers, ensuring personal hygiene and well-being.
  • Maintain and administer inmate medication and recreation.
  • Supervise inmate cell activity, phone calls and visits.
  • Provide assistance in special circumstances and/or emergency situations that includes physical restraint and discipline of inmates as directed.
  • Provide emergency first aid and medical assistance to inmates and staff and as needed.
  • Answer and respond to radio and phone calls, faxes, and emails.
  • Run queries, criminal histories, and other legal documents.
  • Attend quarterly and annual training on relevant topics such as CPR/First aid, defensive tactics, team meetings, and Mantoux testing.
  • Manage end of the month paperwork records, monthly in-house detention records, suspense files, validations, gun permits, misdemeanor theft project, and launder department items.
  • Fingerprint individuals for suspense files, court records and other agencies.
  • Communicate with probation, divisional court, and the public defender's office, and set up and supervise virtual meetings for inmates prior to court.
  • Provide training to new detention officers.

Minimum and Desired Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • 18 years of age or older
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid drivers license
  • One (1) year of experience in corrections, law enforcement, public safety and/or security.
  • The following felony and gross misdemeanor convictions (including pardons and expungements) WILL result in the rejection of a detention officer application:
  • Controlled substance conviction
  • Criminal sexual misconduct conviction
  • Bias or benefit of a gang related crime
  • Conviction of assaulting, fleeing or eluding a police officer, firefighter, paramedic, etc. under 609.50 resulting in a gross misdemeanor conviction in the last 60 months, or a misdemeanor conviction in the last 36 months
  • Evidence that the applicant has misrepresented or falsified any information to any law enforcement agency

An equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position MAY be considered.

Drug & Alcohol Testing/Medical Examination/Psychological Examination

All job applicants must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test/medical examination, and psychological examination once a conditional offer of employment has been made. Applicants who do not consent to undergo drug and alcohol testing will not be required to do so and the City will withdraw the conditional job offer, resulting in the job applicant no longer being considered for the position.

Additional Information

Anticipated Work Schedule: Position is a full-time, non-exempt, union position that will work a 12-hour shift on a rotating schedule of four (4) days on and four (4) days off. Detention officers bid for their shifts based on seniority. They work one of the following shifts: 6PM-6AM, 6AM-6PM, and 3PM-3AM. Newly hired detention officers most likely will end up on a night schedule.

Anticipated Hiring Wage: $34.93-$44.89 per hour, depending on qualifications, with full-time employee benefit package. This pay range is based on the 2025 contract. Once the 2026 contract is finalized, the pay rate will be adjusted.

Selection Process

The selection process will consist of one or more of the following steps: a rating of relevant education and experience and/or an oral examination (100%). Only those candidates who attain a passing score (70%) on each step in the selection process will be placed on the eligible list.
