Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent. An evaluation of foreign high school diploma may be required.
  • Six (6) months of experience in detention operations, institutional security, custodial services, commercial laundry, facility operations, or a related field preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered. Such experience must be clearly documented for consideration.

Special Requirements

  • Compliance with requirement to adhere to uniformed dress code criteria; continued employment contingent upon the ability to participate in and satisfactorily complete within the initial probationary period the established in-house training program.
  • Employees in this classification are scheduled for shift assignments, which will include weekends, holidays, overtime hours, and extended emergency activation events (e.g. hurricanes). Employees must engage in flexible work assignments as directed in order to meet probationary standards and requirements.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Florida drivers license throughout employment without any restrictions which affect job performance.

Nature of Work

Under general supervision, the Detention Technician performs detention security and facility support functions within the Department of Detention. Duties may include controlling access to secure areas, monitoring electronic security systems, communicating with staff and inmates, documenting operational activity, and performing sanitation, laundry, food service support, utility, and supply distribution duties. Based on assignments, Detention Technicians may be required to supervise inmate work details while adhering to agency policies and security procedures. Performs related work as directed.

Essential Functions/Physical Requirements

The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. Controls and monitors ingress and egress, facility access, and inmate movement by operating electronic security doors, gates, elevators, sallyports, and remote-control security systems.

Coordinates, tracks, and documents inmate activity/movement and staff activity through electronic systems and handwritten logs.

Maintains accountability for assigned keys, restraints, emergency equipment, security devices, and controlled property.

Receives, relays, and communicates security information, emergency notifications, equipment malfunctions, security violations, and operational concerns to appropriate personnel.

Communicates with deputies and inmates through intercom and radio systems to maintain order and support operations.

Verifies identification and authorizes entry and exit of staff, contractors, visitors, and authorized personnel.

Uses agency computer systems to input, retrieve, and maintain inmate and operational information.

Performs sanitation, custodial, laundry, utility, food service support, and supply distribution duties, including issuing, inventorying, and distributing institutional clothing, linens, equipment, and operational supplies.

Maintains cleanliness through sanitation, waste collection, surface cleaning, painting, and related maintenance.

May supervise or escort inmate work crews performing approved housekeeping, sanitation, laundry, and utility assignments.

Operates agency vehicles when required.

Employees in this classification are assigned to work shifts which will include weekends, holidays, and extended emergency activation events (i.e. hurricanes). Employees must have the ability to work any shift and engage in flexible work assignments that can include voluntary and/or mandatory overtime to meet agency needs.

Performs related duties as directed.

Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate physical effort in to light to moderately heavy work, typically involving some combination of bending, reaching, stooping, or kneeling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderately heavy weight (20-50 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time standing or sitting at a workstation. May require occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavier objects. Tasks are performed in a detention environment where proper provisions are in place in terms of employee security and protection. Due to the nature and location of the work environment, tasks include potential for intermittent exposure to disagreeable elements consistent with routine conditions in a detention detainment environment, e.g., loud noise, pathogens, violent behavior.

While an integral part of the security staff, position does not have regular physical contact with inmates; however, indirect contact might occur during normal operational activity.
