Cullerton Group has a new opportunity for a Dev/Research Engineer 2 (Metallurgical Engineer). The work will be done onsite in Decatur, IL. This is a long-term position that can lead to permanent employment with our client. Compensation is up to $36/hr + full benefits (vision, dental, health insurance, 401k, and holiday pay).

Job Summary
We are seeking a Metallurgical Engineer to support a laboratory team focused on ensuring the quality and performance of mining and construction equipment components. This hands-on role involves failure analysis, material qualification, and collaboration with cross-functional engineering and manufacturing teams. The engineer will work in a certified laboratory environment and contribute to maintaining high-quality standards through testing and analysis. This position offers exposure to advanced metallurgical techniques and industry-recognized testing standards.

Key Responsibilities
• Perform failure analysis on returned components to determine root causes
• Conduct metallurgical evaluations including microscopy, metallography, and fractography
• Develop and execute test plans, including destructive and non-destructive testing
• Interpret engineering prints and material specifications to validate part quality
• Collaborate with manufacturing, design, and quality teams to implement corrective actions

Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science Engineering
• 3+ years of relevant experience in metallurgical or materials engineering (preferred)
• Experience with laboratory testing methods such as SEM/EDS, hardness testing, tensile and Charpy testing
• Knowledge of non-destructive evaluation (NDE) and failure analysis techniques
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and general engineering software tools

Preferred Qualifications
• Experience working in an ISO-accredited laboratory environment (e.g., ISO 17025)
• Familiarity with ASTM standards and testing methods
• Strong background in metallography, microscopy, and mechanical testing
• Experience in heavy equipment, manufacturing, or industrial environments preferred
