Development and Communications Intern 

 

Date Available: August, 2026 through December, 2026 – with potential to extend to April, 2027 

Job Type: Internship, part-time, 10-15 hours per week 

Compensation: $15/hour – job is Workshare Eligible  

Supervisor: Director of Development  

Location: Senior Neighbors Inc., Central Office, 678 Front Ave NW Suite 205, Grand Rapids, MI 49504

Position Summary 

The Development and Communications Intern will work closely with the Director of Development, Marketing & Communications Coordinator, Development Coordinator, and other staff members to support the execution of communication campaigns, social media efforts, event planning, and donor engagement activities. This role offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in nonprofit development and communications while contributing to impactful projects that support Senior Neighbors' mission. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, creative, and eager to learn, with a passion for supporting older adults in our community. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.  

Social Media & Content Creation: 

  • Create and schedule social media content to promote Senior Neighbors’ brand, services, fundraising efforts, and events. 
  • Assist in gathering, creating, and editing content for newsletters, emails, and other communication pieces. 
  • Monitor social media analytics and provide reports to help optimize engagement strategies. 

Event Support: 

  • Assist in the planning, promotion, and execution of fundraising and community events, including logistics coordination and volunteer management. 
  • Support the Development Coordinators by preparing materials, organizing resources, and ensuring smooth event operations. 

Donor & Volunteer Engagement: 

  • Help coordinate communication with donors and volunteers, including sending thank-you notes, managing volunteer schedules, and following up after events. 
  • Assist in maintaining accurate donor records in the DonorPerfect database. 

Administrative Tasks: 

  • Attend internal team meetings, take notes, and establish action items for follow-up. 
  • Provide general administrative support to the Development team, including scheduling meetings, organizing files, and managing calendars.

Requirements

Qualifications 

Education / Experience: 

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent. 
  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree at a 2 or 4-year accredited college or university. 

Competencies: 

  • Affinity for older adults and an understanding of their value to the community. 
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with attention to detail. 
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage time effectively, and work independently. 
  • Experience with social media platforms and basic analytics preferred. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); basic Adobe Creative Suite or Canva skills are a plus. 
  • Ability to use remote software such as Zoom and Teams. 

 

Special Licensing 

  • Must have a satisfactory driving record and access to private transportation that meets state insurance requirements and vehicle safety standards for agency business. 

Expected Hours of Work 

  • 10 hours per week, with a flexible schedule. Standard office hours are M-F 8:00am-4:30pm. 

Physical Demands / Work Environment 

This job operates in a typical office setting and is largely sedentary. The role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.
