Description:The Development Test Engineer Job is responsible for evaluating, comparing, and improving the performance of gasoline engine aftertreatment systems to meet or exceed regulatory standards, optimize efficiency, and support product development. This engineer will also be responsible for developing and integrating system technologies including engine hardware, exhaust sensors, control strategies, calibration, and the integration of these technologies into the propulsion system to meet upcoming emissions standards (e.g., TIER4, California LEV IV, EURO7, China 7, etc.) for future vehicle propulsion applications for electrified vehicles. Projects will utilize engine, powertrain, or vehicle chassis dynamometers and/or simulation/modeling to make physics-based decisions and demonstrate proof-of-concept solutions to prove Propulsion functional objectives are satisfied. The engineer will act as both an individual contributor and as part of teams within and outside of the Emissions and Aftertreatment group, both internal and external to the company. The engineer will interact with core engine, controls, regulatory, and supplier teams as part of a globally integrated Emissions and Aftertreatment group within the larger Propulsion Calibration Group.
Key responsibilities:- Direct/Schedule day-to-day activities of engine/PT dynamometer or vehicle-based testing, which may include interaction with technicians and support engineers
- Apply appropriate procedures and methodologies for project management (planning, scheduling, and reporting) to reach project deliverables including use of tools such as: MS Project, Excel, etc.
- Develop emissions systems solutions for future high efficiency powertrains including system trade-offs for cost, performance, complexity, etc., while meeting all quality and regulatory requirements
- Optimize/adjust the calibration of the engine and emissions system to fit new emissions hardware
- Investigates competitor vehicles' emission systems through instrumentation and on-board diagnostics (OBD) to assess performance, identify differences, and understand strategies to meet or exceed regulatory requirements
- Define and direct multiple technology development projects internally and at suppliers to meet the critical needs of the emissions system
- Plan, test, analyze, and solve complex system problems as they relate to the entire powertrain system to meet key objectives such as performance, emissions, diagnostics, NVH, quality, fuel economy, etc.
- Ensure proper integration of emissions system components such as advanced catalysts, gasoline particulate filters, and other enablers for future powertrains through communication of emissions system and component levels functional requirements to Powertrain engineering and management teams
Mandatory Skills:- Bachelor of Science degree in Automotive, Chemical, Mechanical or Electrical/Computer Engineering from an ABET accredited university
- 2+ years of accumulated experience and systems level engineering skills with hardware, controls, or calibration development in the following areas: port fueled and direct injection spark ignition engines for ICE and hybrid applications, powertrain systems, OBD, emissions systems, and virtual analysis - modeling/simulation (e.g., GT-Power, AVL Boost, AxiSuite and/or similar tools) and appropriate application to simplify hardware testing
- Experience analyzing and running various emissions global test cycles and various test cell environments as well as experience using common powertrain data acquisition systems such as INCA, CAS, AVL Concerto, TCKs, INTECRIO, etc.
- Working level understanding of key combustion processes, engine hardware, thermal system, transmission system, OBD system and electrified propulsion systems
- Knowledge of interactions / trade-offs between emissions, OBD, fuel economy, cost, drivability, and NVH
- Able to quickly identify, root cause, and refine calibrations to improve emissions system performance and capable of providing simple explanations of complex systems / solutions
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills
- Outstanding problem solving and analytical skills to overcome obstacles
- Ability to effectively operate both independently and as part of a team
- Self-motivated and proactive
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite applications
- Skilled in post processing, organizing, analyzing, and presenting technical findings to immediate and senior management
