Job Title: DevOps Engineer
Job Description
The DevOps Engineer designs, builds, and manages secure, scalable infrastructure in Microsoft Azure while enabling reliable software delivery through modern DevOps practices. This role focuses on Azure infrastructure management, Kubernetes and container orchestration, CI/CD pipeline development, automation and scripting, security and compliance, monitoring and troubleshooting, disaster recovery, and close collaboration with cross-functional teams. You will play a key role in optimizing performance, improving operational efficiency, and driving continuous improvement across the full technology stack in a fast-growing environment with the agility of a start-up and the stability of a large organization.
Responsibilities
- Design, deploy, and manage scalable, secure cloud infrastructure using Azure services, ensuring high availability, fault tolerance, and adherence to organizational policies and industry standards.
- Automate the provisioning and configuration of Azure resources using Infrastructure as Code tools such as Azure DevOps and Azure Resource Manager (ARM) templates to enable repeatable, consistent, and version-controlled deployments.
- Monitor, manage, and optimize the performance, availability, and cost-efficiency of Azure resources using tools such as Azure Monitor, Datadog, and SolarWinds Orion, ensuring systems operate efficiently and within budget.
- Build, manage, and maintain Kubernetes clusters and containerized services in Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS), focusing on security, scalability, service discovery, workload orchestration, and integration with CI/CD pipelines and monitoring solutions.
- Design, deploy, and manage secure, scalable Azure networking infrastructure including virtual networks (VNets), subnets, network security groups (NSGs), VPN gateways, ExpressRoute, and load balancers or firewalls to support multi-customer environments.
- Configure and maintain active-active VPN gateways with BGP routing and custom IPsec/IKE policies to provide reliable site-to-site connectivity to third-party cloud environments.
- Implement and support DevOps toolchains including Azure Repos, GitHub, SonarQube, Fortify or Veracode, and HashiCorp Vault to streamline development workflows, enforce code quality, secure secrets, and support continuous delivery.
- Configure, manage, and leverage operational monitoring and observability tools such as Splunk and Datadog to proactively detect anomalies, improve system visibility, reduce mean time to resolution, and support incident management.
- Develop and maintain automation workflows and deployment pipelines that enable consistent, reliable builds and releases, improving the efficiency and reliability of software delivery processes.
- Manage relational and non-relational databases, including schema design, creation, optimization, and complex query development, while ensuring data integrity and performance tuning.
- Integrate and maintain enterprise tools and messaging systems such as RabbitMQ to support robust communication across microservices and distributed systems with high-throughput, fault-tolerant message processing.
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps or other CI/CD tools to automate container image creation, testing, and deployment.
- Implement automated testing, build, and deployment processes to ensure seamless integration of code changes and consistent delivery to various environments.
- Design and implement strategies for zero-downtime deployments and rollbacks to minimize service disruption during releases.
- Develop and maintain automation scripts and tools using PowerShell, Python, or other scripting languages to streamline operations and reduce manual tasks.
- Automate routine operational activities such as system updates, backups, and monitoring configuration to improve reliability and consistency.
- Create automated workflows for infrastructure provisioning, application deployment, and configuration management across environments.
- Implement and manage security best practices in Azure, including identity and access management, network security, and data protection.
- Ensure compliance with relevant industry standards and regulatory requirements such as GDPR, HIPAA, SOC 2, and similar frameworks.
- Perform regular security audits and vulnerability assessments to identify and remediate risks within the environment.
- Set up and manage monitoring and alerting solutions using Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, Datadog, SolarWinds Orion, and other tools to provide comprehensive visibility into system health.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to infrastructure, deployments, and system performance, working to restore services quickly and prevent recurrence.
- Analyze system logs and performance metrics to proactively identify, investigate, and address potential issues before they impact users.
- Collaborate closely with software development teams to ensure applications are designed for scalability, security, and high availability in the Azure environment.
- Work with cross-functional teams including quality assurance, security, and operations to deliver reliable, efficient, and well-supported services.
- Participate in agile ceremonies such as sprint planning, daily stand-ups, and retrospectives, providing technical input and support to the team.
- Stay current with developments in Azure services, DevOps tools, and industry best practices, and bring forward recommendations for improvement.
- Continuously evaluate and implement new technologies and processes to enhance the efficiency, reliability, and scalability of the DevOps pipeline.
- Maintain and expand your knowledge across the full technology stack, demonstrating a strong desire to learn and grow.
- Analyze existing processes to identify automation opportunities across multiple platforms and technologies, and implement solutions that reduce manual effort.
- Mentor and provide guidance to junior DevOps engineers and other team members to help build skills and promote best practices.
- Develop and maintain disaster recovery plans and backup strategies to ensure business continuity in the event of failures or outages.
- Regularly test disaster recovery procedures and validate backup processes to ensure they are reliable, efficient, and aligned with recovery objectives.
Essential Skills
- Hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure services including virtual machines (VMs), monitoring, Azure Active Directory (Azure AD), and resource management.
- Proficiency in building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines, specifically using Azure DevOps, to support automated builds, tests, and deployments.
