General Summary

  • The Diabetic Educator educates and supports people affected by diabetes to understand and manage the condition. The Diabetic Educator promotes self-management through instruction and training to achieve individualized behavioral and treatment goals that optimize health outcomes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Communicates effectively with staff, and physicians to ensure high quality care.
  • Demonstrates excellent teaching skills and prioritizes duties to ensure organization and quality education.
  • Provides clinical resources and consultation to staff, patients, or physicians to assist in the treatment of diabetes.
  • Conducts health and educational assessment of patients and develops individual and family diabetes self-care plans consistent with cultural, social and psychological requirements for the best possible care and comprehension.
  • Provides education to clients and family members regarding self-care, maintaining optimal health, and preventing complications.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing or Nutrition Science required.

Work Experience

  • Minimum of two (2) years to the day of professional practice experience in the discipline under which the individual is applying for certification (examples: if an individual applies for certification as a registered nurse, 2 years of experience working as a registered nurse is required; if an individual applies as a registered dietitian, 2 years of experience working as a registered dietitian is required).

Certification/License

  • Registered Dietitian or Registered Nurse licensure required. CDE certification preferred.

Mental/Physical Requirements

  • (May be met with appropriate accommodations if deemed necessary): Considerable mental concentration on various projects and assignments. Standing, stooping, bending, walking, sitting, and lifting up to 35 lbs. Unpredictable environment with wide variations in the types of patients and acuity levels, varying conditions regarding temperature control and potential exposure to hazardous materials. Potential exposure to infectious disease. Frequent auditory distractions.

Working Conditions

  • Typical office conditions with frequent out-of-office work and occasional to frequent domestic travel required.
