Summary:
- The Diagnostic Physicist Trainee is a Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs (CAMPEP) accredited 2-year training program within the physics section of Penn Medicine Department of Radiology. The trainee will gain hands on experience in areas of diagnostic physics such as: proper accreditation, compliance and regulatory inspections of all imaging modalities; diagnostic physics research; radiation safety and health physics; clinical awareness, professionalism, communication and educational techniques. During the course of the 2-year program, the trainee will have progressive responsibilities with the expectation to perform tasks independently with indirect supervision. Training will be conducted by experienced ABR certified Penn Medicine staff physicists. At the completion of the 2-year program, the trainee will be eligible to take the American Board of Radiology (ABR) Diagnostic Physics certification examination and will be well prepared to seek employment as an entry-level diagnostic physicist.
Responsibilities:
Acceptance, annual, and post-repair performance testing of imaging equipment
Establishing, maintaining, and evaluating appropriate quality control programs for various imaging modalities
Assessment of image quality and trouble-shooting image artifacts
Accreditation testing for all imaging modalities
Radiation protection and safety including shielding design, patient and fetal dose estimations, personnel dosimetry services, and general health physics topics
Protocol optimization, radiation dose tracking, and technology management
Conducting research in and educating others about the field of imaging physics
Clinical awareness, professionalism and communication
Credentials:
Education or Equivalent Experience:
- Master of Arts or Science (Required) Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs (CAMPEP) accredited program
OR
- Ph.D. (Required) from non CAMPEP accredited program AND certificate from CAMPEP accredited certificate program
OR
- Ph.D. from non CAMPEP accredited program AND graduate-level core topics: 1. Radiological Physics and Dosimetry 2. Radiation Protection and Radiation Safety 3. Fundamentals of Imaging in Medicine 4. Radiobiology 5. Anatomy and Physiology 6. Radiation Therapy Physic
