## Summary The radiology technologist is responsible for the performance and coordination of all diagnostic radiology examinations and fluoroscopic x-ray procedures for the STVHCS. This may include the Kerrville Division, North Central Federal Clinic, and Frank Tejeda Outpatient Clinic as needed.

## Duties Major Duties:

  • Performs standard radiographic examinations of the head, trunk, and extremities for the diagnosis of illness and injuries with minimal to no assistance.
  • Receives patients and explains examinations to be performed, ensuring patients are properly attired and prepared before positioning them for the requested examination.
  • Performs procedures as defined by equipment and scope of services, possibly including:
  • GI and small bowel series
  • Cholecystograms and cholangiograms
  • Urethorograms
  • Barium and air contrast enemas
  • Myelograms and arthrograms
  • Venograms
  • DXA Scans and contrast injections
  • Correlates clinical history, pertinent clinical data, and other ancillary diagnostic examinations to obtain radiographic images of optimal value.
  • Assists radiologists in fluoroscopic examinations which require the incumbent to prepare and administer intravenous, oral, or rectal contrast media.
  • Performs fluoroscopic studies (e.g., upper GIs, barium enemas, esophagrams, small bowel follow-through) on a digital fluoroscopy unit employing direct digital radiography.
  • Assists in training employees and student technologists.
  • Coordinates radiation safety, receives patients, explains procedures, prepares x-ray rooms and equipment, and performs portable or emergency room (Triage and recovery room) procedures.
  • Maintains records of patients examined and studies performed in the VISTA hospital information system and CPRS.
  • Evaluates the nature of critical and emergency procedures and rearranges patient priorities to accommodate more urgent requirements.
  • Explains exams to competent patients so they understand what is to be done and what hazards, if any, are possible.
  • Monitors vital signs, recognizes allergic reactions, and initiates cardiopulmonary resuscitation when required by procedure or patient condition.
  • Properly identifies patient images using left and right markers to prevent mistaken identity.
  • Performs operator maintenance on equipment as required.
  • Responsible to radiologists and supervisors for the quality and quantity of radiographic exams performed to ensure high acceptability while minimizing patient dosage and reducing costs.
  • Performs quality control/assurance checks on studies to ensure only optimally diagnostic images are forwarded for interpretation.
  • Practices radiation safety to reduce exposure to patients, staff, and self (using lead aprons, gloves, shields, lead-lined walls, collimation, and film badges).
  • Performs call duties to include after-hour tours, weekends, and holidays.
  • Is familiar with PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) to provide adequate and proper radiographs.
  • Performs clerical duties including registering patients/examinations in VISTA and file room duties (making CDs, sending exams to NTP).
  • Maintains current knowledge of developments in allied health sciences related to Radiologic technology and maintains current ARRT registration.

  • Trial Period: A 1 or 2-year trial period is required during which fitness and public interest advancement will be evaluated. Employment is terminated upon completion unless certification in writing is received.

### Qualifications Basic Requirements:

  • Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program evidenced by a certificate or associate degree accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or other DOE-recognized agencies.
  • Credentialing: Must meet Public Law 97-35 standards. Essentially, successful completion of an accredited educational program and certification as a radiographer.
  • Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (Radiography - R).
  • Advanced Certification: Required for assignments including CT, MRI, or Mammography duties performed independently.
  • Non-Certified Entry Level: Non-certified DRTs meeting ARRT eligibility may be given a temporary appointment (GS-5) for up to two years under supervision. This does not apply to GS-8 positions.

Grade Determinations (GS-08):

  • Experience: At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-7) demonstrating clinical competencies at that level.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
  • Ability to check systems for operation and assess performance based on guidelines.
  • Knowledge of calibration parameters and ability to make adjustments.
  • Knowledge of patient clinical records, diagnosis, and laboratory results.
  • Ability to monitor patient physiologic changes during procedures.
  • Skill in using tact, diplomacy, and courtesy with patients, staff, and visitors.
  • Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and cross-sectional anatomy; recognizing unusual images and determining proper positioning.

Physical Requirements:

  • Moderate lifting (15-44 lbs), carrying (15-44 lbs), straight pulling, pushing, reaching above shoulder, use of fingers/both hands, walking, standing, kneeling, and repeated bending.
  • Rapid mental and muscular coordination.
  • Far vision correctable to 20/20 in one eye and 20/40 in the other.
  • Hearing aid may be permitted.
