JOB SUMMARY: Performs diagnostic examinations for subsequent evaluation and treatment by attending physicians and radiologists. The Radiologic Technologist will individualize patient care based upon the age appropriate and developmental needs. Should be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on their unit. Participates in the department's on-call rotation as assigned to support departmental operations and patient care needs. Performs other duties as assigned.

PERFORMANCE DIMENSIONS AND TASKS

Essential Function

  1. Performs diagnostic techniques and examinations.

a. Regularly performs all special procedures according to established procedures outlined in the department manual. Adjusts controls according to knowledge of standard settings to consistently produce diagnostic quality records.

b. Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of equipment capability; consistently produces high quality results.

c. Observes patient and machine during special procedures and reports any unusual occurrences; always informs appropriate personnel of any changes in patient condition.

d. Routinely reviews all films for radiologist and attending physician approval.

e. Demonstrates the ability to solve job related problems, such as alternate patient positioning, different views and the realization of equipment and patient limitations.

f. Tests are always performed in accordance with the department procedure manual.

g. Routinely assists in general radiographic procedures when requested by radiologists or department manager; assists physician in administering radiopaque media.

h. Demonstrates proficiency in use of portable X-Ray equipment in Surgery, Emergency Room, Nursery and at bedside.

i. Demonstrates proficiency in Computed Tomography (CT) procedures, including routine and advanced CT imaging as assigned, following established departmental protocols and radiation safety standards.

j. Performs CT examinations with and without contrast, ensuring proper patient preparation, positioning, and image quality.

k. Assist in administration of IV contrast media for CT studies in accordance with hospital policy and scope of practice.

l. Monitors patient during CT procedures for adverse reactions and responds appropriately, notifying appropriate medical staff as needed.

m. Ensures accurate documentation and adherence to CT imaging protocols, including dose optimization and ALARA principles.

n. Assess Renal function prior to contrast administration and obtaining peripheral IV access

o. Assess patient risk for allergic reaction(s) to medication prior to contrast administration

p. Assess patient medication list to determine potential contraindications to procedure

  1. Meets patient physical and psychological needs.

a. Always thoroughly explains the nature of the test in detail to patient in order to alleviate patient fears and anxiety; addresses patient concerns about equipment operation; always generally responsive to patient needs.

b. Demonstrates competence at all times in transferring patient to exam table; demonstrates respect for patient modesty.

  1. Provides radiation protection to self and patient.

a. Always provides protection to patient in accordance prescribed radiation safety standards based on ALARA Principles.

b. Always wears prescribed radiation equipment devices; follows radiologic exposure procedures.

c. Wears protective clothing, as required.

  1. Performs routine inspection and maintenance of equipment.

a. Regularly inspects equipment to ensure proper working order; performs preventative maintenance on a routine schedule; performs diagnostic testing on equipment and some general maintenance on weekly basis.

  1. Assists in keeping equipment and area clean in securing.

a. Regularly checks equipment, accessories and supplies; keeps area stocked at all times; cleans and disinfects equipment after each patient use; daily cleans special procedures area.

b. Always keeps own work area in clean and sanitary condition.

  1. Assists in department clerical duties.

a. Demonstrates a willingness and ability to assist others as requested may perform receptionist/clerical responsibilities and other assignments.

  1. Participates in training and inservice functions.

a. Attends staff meetings and in-service programs.

QUALIFICATIONS

Licensing Requirements:

  • Current State of California Diagnostic Radiologic Technology license - Required
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification - Required
  • Current ARRT certification and registration - Required
  • California Venipuncture Certificate - within 3 months of signing job description - Required
  • California Fluoroscopy Certificate - within 6 months of signing job description - Required

Language Requirements:

  • Strong written and oral English skills - Required

Work Experience:

  • Experience in Diagnostic Radiologic Technology
  • CT experience - Preferred
  • Demonstrates competence in all areas of hospital diagnostic radiological technology procedures

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to stand/walk between 4 to 6 hours per day.
  • Must be able to bend, reach overhead, crouch, balance and push up to two hours per day.
  • Must be able to lift up to 35 pounds.

Work Schedule and Availability Requirements:

  • Works the assigned schedule and maintains regular attendance in accordance with departmental staffing and patient care needs.
  • Must be available to work a flexible schedule, which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, on-call assignments, alternate shifts, and other high-need periods as necessary to support departmental operations.
  • Additional shifts may be offered or required consistent with operational needs and applicable policy.
  • Per diem employees must maintain a minimum availability of two (2) shifts per month.

Exposure to Hazards:

  • Exposure to blood, body fluids, infectious disease/needle puncture wounds, and chemical agents.

Special Considerations:

  • Provides care and services to patients across the lifespan, including pediatric patients.
