Position Summary

We are seeking a Digital Controls Engineer to join our growing R&D organization focused on advanced power electronics applications including welding, plasma cutting, and EV charging systems. This role will be part of a newly formed Digital Controls team responsible for developing, implementing, and validating control algorithms used in high-performance embedded systems.

The ideal candidate has experience developing control loops for power electronics, motor control, or similar real-time systems and enjoys bridging the gap between simulation and physical hardware. This is a highly hands-on engineering role involving modeling, laboratory testing, debugging, and cross-functional collaboration with firmware, hardware, and power electronics teams.

Basic Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related technical field.
  • 2+ years (Engineer II) or 5+ years (Engineer III or IV) of experience developing control systems for power electronics, motor drives, automotive systems, industrial equipment, or similar applications.
  • Experience with control theory and closed-loop control systems.
  • Experience using MATLAB/Simulink or similar modeling and simulation tools.
  • Hands-on laboratory experience debugging and validating hardware systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with power electronics, motor control, welding systems, automotive controls, or EV-related technologies.
  • Familiarity with digital signal processors (DSPs) or FPGA-based control systems.
  • Exposure to embedded software or firmware development in C/C++.
  • Experience working with analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), real-time control systems, and signal conditioning.
  • Understanding of model-based design methodologies.

Controls Development and Implementation

  • Design, develop, and optimize control algorithms for power electronics and real-time embedded systems.
  • Develop and tune control loops, compensators, filters, and related control strategies.
  • Utilize modeling and simulation tools, such as MATLAB/Simulink, to evaluate and refine system performance.
  • Support implementation of control algorithms on embedded processors and digital control platforms.

System Validation and Debugging

  • Perform hands-on laboratory testing and validation of control systems on prototype and production hardware.
  • Investigate discrepancies between simulation results and real-world system behavior.
  • Analyze test data to identify root causes of performance issues and drive corrective actions.
  • Utilize oscilloscopes, power analyzers, logic analyzers, and other lab equipment to troubleshoot complex system interactions.

Cross-Functional Engineering Support

  • Collaborate with firmware, hardware, power electronics, and systems engineering teams to ensure successful implementation of control solutions.
  • Participate in architecture discussions, design reviews, and technical problem-solving activities.
  • Contribute to system-level performance improvements through data-driven analysis and experimentation.

Documentation and Technical Communication

  • Document control system designs, simulation results, testing activities, and engineering findings.
  • Communicate technical concepts and recommendations effectively across engineering disciplines.
