What You Will Do

Come join a group of staff that will be working to digitize, index and digitally curate classified physical collections at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The information you digitize, and index will have an immediate impact to the Laboratory's mission.

You will be working in coordination with one of the largest libraries in the Federal Government, the National Security Research Center (NSRC). The NSRC is LANL's classified library, containing tens of millions of documents, films, books, and other archival material related to the development, testing, and production of nuclear weapons, dating back to the first days of the Manhattan Project. The NSRC's collections contain a breadth of classified technical information related to physics, chemistry, engineering, material science, intelligence, and national security. We are looking for an individual with a background in handling, digitizing, indexing, tracking, storage, and transmission of electronic and hard copy unclassified and/or classified documentary materials.

As an Information Research Specialist 2, you will digitize materials, populate metadata/indexing information that will be used to develop a robust catalog, provide quality control for the digitized materials and indices, and track digital files through our digitization workflow. You will complete minor maintenance and repairs of scanning equipment, set up scanning equipment for various media types and sizes, and perform any finishing tasks associated with media to securely store original master copies. Assist with customer research requests for locating digitized technical information, assure secure storage and handling of classified information, assist in the development and documentation of digitization workflows of archived media, and act as a vault-type room custodian and classified matter custodian.

Minimum Job Requirements:


Technical Knowledge:
For this role, you will need experience in using at least one type of digitization equipment, populating metadata fields for small to moderate size collections of documentary materials, and performing quality control/assurance reviews of digital files and metadata. In addition, you must be a demonstrated self-starter with the ability to work independently without direct supervision with strong attention to detail.

Customer Relations
:
You will be required to have experience in customer-focused communication and relations and the ability to work in a team environment.

Clearance: You will have the ability to obtain a Q clearance, which requires US citizenship.

Education/Experience: Position requires a bachelor's degree in a relevant field and 5 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

Digitization Familiarity

Experience in operating two or more types of professional digitizing equipment for paper, microfilm, microfiche, video, or other media. Creating indices and populating detailed metadata for a variety of materials in small to moderate size collections of documentary materials and performing quality control/assurance of digital files and metadata. Writing processing documents and best practices guides for digitization or a related task.

LANL Familiarity
Basic understanding of the weapons program within LANL, along with experience working with classified material in a classified environment.

Technical Knowledge
Demonstrated experience working in a records or archival organization. Experience in Classified Matter Protection and Control; and Vault Access training. Experience in using LANL's classified network systems, uploading, cataloging, and retrieving documents. Document custodian background and experience and/or records management, document control background and experience.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is a 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q(Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
