Dimensional Metrology CMM Programmer

A day in your life here

You begin with an engineering print and 3D model in hand. You translate GD&T callouts into a clear measurement strategy, then build a robust CMM routine to verify every feature that matters. When a drawing leaves datums undefined, you design a practical scheme that makes the measurement traceable and repeatable. Before lunch, you remediate an existing CMM program to tighten cycle time and improve reporting. Later, you jump on the floor to coach an operator through a tricky comparator check, then return to compile an FAI and a capability study, making sure data tells a clean, defensible story.

What you will accomplish

  • Interpret engineering drawings/models and program the coordinate measuring machine (CMM) for receiving, in-process, and final inspections.
  • Formulate measurement schemes when datums are missing or ambiguous, ensuring alignment strategies are sound.
  • Verify materials and finished product conform to print and specification requirements.
  • Create new, part-specific CMM programs and remediate/optimize existing ones.
  • Measure parts with appropriate instruments: optical comparator, micrometers, calipers, and functional/vision systems.
  • Inspect to internal, customer, and applicable regulatory requirements; document results accurately.
  • Record test data and produce technical reports using defined templates (FAI, capability studies, Gage R&R).
  • Identify and segregate nonconforming material; initiate NCMRs per internal procedures.
  • Lead continuous improvement within the metrology lab; author controlled lab procedures as needed.
  • Serve as the go-to technical resource for measurement methods and technique for production and quality teams.
  • Partner with Quality Engineers and Management to interpret standards and recommend best-fit measurement approaches.
  • Assist in programming other site inspection systems (e.g., Starrett comparators, SmartScope, Keyence) following training provided by Avalign.
  • Own metrology-related CAPAs and drive effective closure.
  • Contribute to New Product Introduction by shaping inspection plans and gage design discussions.

What sets you up for success

  • Proven blueprint literacy with strong GD&T and inspection methodology expertise.
  • 2+ years of hands-on CMM programming experience.
  • Familiarity with ISO 13485 and 21 CFR 820 is preferred.
  • Clear, professional communication and a collaborative approach.

How you show up

  • Self-starter who thrives in a fast-moving environment.
  • Curious, quick learner eager to deepen manufacturing knowledge.
  • Dependable and accountable when it counts most.
  • Open, cooperative, and team-oriented; able to plan and execute across groups.
  • Effective in both written and verbal communication.
