A day in the life

You start your shift on the production floor, blueprint in hand, confirming the first piece off a line meets customer specs. A few hours later, you’re verifying grain flow on a critical part, documenting tensile and hardness results, and updating records in the ERP so everything is traceable. By afternoon, you’re partnering with production and engineering to disposition a nonconforming lot and issuing a Repair Shop Order—then wrapping up with a final inspection and calibration check on a frequently used gage.

What you’ll do

  • Interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and GD&T to verify dimensional compliance
  • Complete first-piece inspections for multiple departments
  • Run in-process and final inspections; accurately fill out history cards and inspection reports
  • Audit the floor for adherence to control plans and work instructions
  • Set up and operate precision and special gaging: micrometers, calipers, optical comparators, and other metrology tools
  • Prepare test samples using cut-off saws and related equipment
  • Perform hardness, tensile, and torque testing to the relevant standards
  • Conduct grain flow testing and safely mix required chemicals for metallurgical evaluations
  • Evaluate raw materials to confirm they meet specifications
  • Complete PPAP documentation as assigned
  • Assist with gage R&R and capability studies under guidance
  • Disposition nonconforming material and generate Repair Shop Orders as needed
  • Review incoming material certifications (raw material, heat treat, plating) for compliance; maintain cert records in the ERP
  • Execute routine calibration on gages and measuring instruments per schedule
  • Maintain all quality documentation and records within the ERP/business system
  • Participate in meetings to support quality initiatives
  • Work with customers and suppliers when needed under the direction of quality leadership
  • Follow all Lean, Safety, Environmental, and Quality policies and procedures
  • Perform other duties as assigned

What you’ll bring

  • 2–4 years of manufacturing quality inspection experience preferred
  • Proven skill reading blueprints and interpreting GD&T
  • Hands-on experience with precision instruments and special gaging
  • Familiarity with PPAP and statistical tools preferred
  • Basic computer skills; ERP experience preferred

How you work

  • Meticulous attention to detail and measurement accuracy
  • Working knowledge of dimensional inspection and test methods
  • Confident identifying nonconforming product and escalating appropriately
  • Basic understanding of SPC concepts
  • Solid documentation and recordkeeping
  • Clear communicator who collaborates effectively with production teams
  • Committed to continuous improvement and compliance

Physical realities of the role

  • Stand and walk for extended periods
  • Lift and handle parts up to 40 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Perform repetitive hand movements while measuring and testing
  • Work in manufacturing areas including heat treat and production
  • Wear required PPE
