Dining Service Student Employment

Salary: $12.00-$13.00

I. Position Purpose

The Dining Services Student Worker provides support for the daily operations of Hocking College Dining Services. This position assists with food preparation, food service, customer service, sanitation, and general dining operations while helping create a positive dining experience for students, employees, and guests.

Student employees gain valuable experience in food service operations, customer service, teamwork, communication, time management, and workplace professionalism while contributing to a safe, welcoming, and efficient dining environment.

II. Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide exceptional customer service to students, employees, visitors, and guests.
  • Prepare and serve hot and cold food items according to established recipes, procedures, and food safety standards.
  • Assist with food preparation activities, including portioning, assembling, packaging, and stocking food items.
  • Restock food stations, beverage stations, condiments, utensils, and service supplies as needed.
  • Operate point-of-sale (POS) systems and accurately process transactions, including cash, meal plans, Hawk Bucks, credit cards, and other payment methods.
  • Maintain accurate cash-handling procedures and report discrepancies to supervisors.
  • Follow all food safety, sanitation, and workplace safety procedures, including ServSafe and health department guidelines.
  • Ensure proper storage, labeling, rotation, and handling of food products.
  • Maintain clean, sanitary, and organized work areas, equipment, dining spaces, and food preparation areas.
  • Perform routine cleaning tasks, including washing dishes, sanitizing surfaces, sweeping, mopping, and removing trash.
  • Assist with opening, closing, and daily operational procedures for assigned dining locations.
  • Work effectively both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Follow written and verbal instructions provided by supervisors and dining services staff.
  • Report equipment malfunctions, maintenance concerns, safety hazards, or food safety issues to supervisors.
  • Successfully complete all required training related to food safety, sanitation, customer service, workplace safety, and dining services operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of Dining Services operations.
  • Availability may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events, as Dining Services operates seven days per week.

III. Qualifications - Education, Experience, and Skills

  • Must be currently enrolled as a full-time Hocking College student.
  • Must meet federal requirements for Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP).
  • Must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0.
  • Basic math and cash-handling skills.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to follow food safety, sanitation, and workplace safety guidelines.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Dependability, punctuality, and professionalism.
  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude while serving a diverse campus community.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks including lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, reaching, climbing, and repetitive movements.
  • Ability to safely lift and carry up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to work in environments with varying temperatures, including kitchen, refrigeration, freezer, and outdoor service areas.
  • Willingness and ability to complete all required training and professional development assigned by supervisors, Human Resources, or the College.
  • Previous food service, hospitality, retail, or customer service experience is preferred but not required.
