Director of Accounting and Finance


Location: South Bend, IN









Salary range: $110,000 – $130,000

Position Overview:


Our client is seeking a Director of Accounting and Finance to lead and strengthen the organization’s financial operations while serving as a strategic partner to executive leadership. This role combines hands-on oversight with forward-looking financial strategy, ensuring accurate reporting, scalable systems, and disciplined growth.

The ideal candidate will bring strong technical accounting expertise, operational leadership, and the ability to translate financial data into actionable insights across a dynamic, multi-channel business environment.

Key Responsibilities for the Director of Accounting and Finance:


Financial Leadership & Oversight



  • Lead all accounting operations including general ledger, AP/AR, payroll coordination, and month-end/year-end close

  • Ensure accurate and timely reporting in accordance with GAAP and applicable nonprofit standards

  • Oversee audit processes and required filings (e.g., Form 990)

  • Maintain strong internal controls, policies, and regulatory compliance

  • Manage sales tax strategy including nexus, filings, and automation


Strategic Financial Leadership



  • Serve as a trusted advisor to executive leadership on financial planning and business performance

  • Lead annual budgeting and ongoing forecasting, including scenario planning

  • Deliver financial reporting, variance analysis, and KPIs to leadership and board stakeholders

  • Oversee cash flow, liquidity, and banking relationships


Revenue & Operational Accounting



  • Oversee accounting for product-based operations, including inventory, cost of goods sold, and returns

  • Ensure accurate multi-channel revenue recognition across eCommerce, third-party platforms, and distribution channels

  • Lead royalty or contract-based revenue accounting processes, including accruals and payments

  • Align financial data with sales and inventory reporting to drive profitability insights

  • Manage physical inventory processes and reconciliation


Systems & Process Optimization



  • Lead ERP and financial system administration and optimization

  • Drive improvements in reporting, workflows, and automation (including AI where applicable)

  • Partner cross-functionally to ensure systems support growth and operational needs


Cross-Functional Partnership



  • Collaborate with leadership across sales, marketing, production, and operations

  • Provide financial guidance on product launches, initiatives, and strategic investments


Team Leadership



  • Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team

  • Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and operational excellence

  • Drive change management initiatives related to systems and process improvements


Qualifications for the Director of Accounting and Finance:



  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (MBA preferred)

  • 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership responsibility

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP; nonprofit accounting experience preferred

  • Experience in product-based businesses (inventory, COGS, returns strongly preferred)

  • Background in multi-channel revenue environments (eCommerce, third-party platforms, distribution)

  • Familiarity with sales tax compliance across multiple jurisdictions

  • Experience with ERP systems and process optimization

  • Exposure to royalty or contract-based revenue models is a plus

  • Proven experience in budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management

  • Strong leadership, analytical, and communication skills
