The Director of Clinical Systems Engineering provides system-level leadership for the engineering, integration, interoperability, connectivity, and data capabilities supporting connected medical technologies and Healthcare Technology Management systems across Beth Israel Lahey Health. The Director establishes Clinical Systems Engineering strategy, standards, technical architecture, operating models, and support practices necessary to ensure medical devices, clinical technology systems, and HTM technology platforms are safely, reliably, securely, and effectively integrated within the BILH technology environment.
The Director leads a multidisciplinary technical function responsible for patient-facing medical-device interoperability and clinical systems as well as HTM technology integration, operational data, and associated platform capabilities. The Director serves as a principal liaison between Healthcare Technology Management and Clinical Engineering, Information Services, Information Security, clinical applications teams, clinical departments, vendors, manufacturers, and other stakeholders.
The position provides leadership for medical-device interoperability, Epic and clinical system integration, middleware and integration platforms, connectivity and supporting infrastructure, HTM system integration, operational data capabilities, analytics enablement, cybersecurity collaboration, technical risk management, and complex clinical systems implementations. The Director leads assigned Clinical Systems Engineering, technology integration, and data personnel and ensures development of appropriate technical standards, lifecycle strategies, documentation, support models, performance measures, and competencies.
Based in Boston, this is a hybrid role (on site and remote) with travel between BILH Hospital locations as needed, and in person meetings on Wednesdays in Woburn, MA.
Job Description:
Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but not limited to:
Provides system-level leadership for the Clinical Systems Engineering function and establishes enterprise strategies, technical standards, priorities, operating models, and performance expectations aligned with BILH clinical, operational, and technology objectives.
Develops and maintains a Clinical Systems Engineering technical roadmap encompassing medical-device interoperability, Epic and clinical system integration, middleware, connectivity, supporting infrastructure, HTM technology platforms, system integration, and associated data capabilities.
Leads evaluation and planning for technologies, systems, middleware, infrastructure, and technical architectures required to support medical-device integration and interoperability with the electronic health record and other clinical information systems.
Provides leadership and governance for HTM technology integration and data capabilities, including enterprise healthcare technology platforms, system integrations, data architecture, data stewardship, reporting, analytics enablement, and associated support models.
Leads and establishes priorities for Clinical Systems Engineering personnel, the HTM Integration Architect, assigned healthcare technology data resources, and other technical staff, ensuring appropriate alignment among clinical interoperability, operational technology, data, cybersecurity, and HTM strategic requirements.
Provides technical leadership and governance for major enterprise initiatives involving integrated and connected medical technologies and healthcare technology systems.
Partners with Information Services, clinical applications teams, data governance, and other technology stakeholders to define requirements and standards for interfaces, connectivity, infrastructure, data exchange, system availability, data stewardship, and technical support.
Establishes operational support and lifecycle-management models for integrated medical-device systems, middleware, interfaces, associated servers, infrastructure, HTM technology platforms, and other supported technologies.
Leads development and implementation of technical standards for medical-device connectivity, interoperability, HTM system integration, and data exchange to promote consistency, reliability, maintainability, security, auditability, and supportability across BILH.
Partners with the Executive Director of Clinical Engineering regarding technology evaluation, selection, acquisition, and implementation to ensure appropriate consideration of systems integration, interoperability, infrastructure, support, data, and cybersecurity requirements.
Partners with the Manager of Clinical Engineering and other project leaders to ensure integration requirements, system dependencies, infrastructure needs, technical resources, data requirements, and implementation activities are appropriately incorporated into medical technology projects.
Provides leadership for technical evaluation of new medical equipment and systems with consideration of clinical workflow, Clinical Engineering, information technology, facilities, cybersecurity, interoperability, data, and operational support requirements.
Partners with Information Security and Information Services leadership to develop and maintain processes for medical-device cybersecurity risk assessment, vulnerability management, technical risk mitigation, and escalation.
Coordinates assessment and response to medical-device vulnerabilities and other technical risks and ensures appropriate communication, documentation, mitigation, and follow-up.
Provides leadership for healthcare technology data availability and appropriate use of device, connectivity, integration, asset, service, and system-performance data to support operational and strategic analytics.
Collaborates with HTM/Clinical Engineering leadership regarding use of technical and operational data for lifecycle management, service performance, capital planning, quality improvement, regulatory evidence, and healthcare technology decision-making.
Establishes technical documentation, configuration-management, data stewardship, and traceability expectations for integrated medical-device systems, interfaces, middleware, infrastructure, HTM platforms, and related technologies.
Develops appropriate performance measures for connected medical technologies, integration platforms, HTM technology systems, data quality, system availability, technical support, cybersecurity activities, and Clinical Systems Engineering operations.
Monitors applicable regulatory, accreditation, privacy, security, data-governance, and technology requirements and ensures Clinical Systems Engineering practices appropriately support organizational compliance.
Develops and maintains appropriate disaster recovery, business continuity, downtime, escalation, and support strategies for critical integrated medical-device and healthcare technology systems in collaboration with appropriate stakeholders.
Establishes educational and competency programs related to medical-device integration, connectivity, interoperability, HTM technology systems, data stewardship, technical support, cybersecurity awareness, and other Clinical Systems Engineering responsibilities.
Leads, supervises, mentors, develops, and evaluates assigned Clinical Systems Engineering, technology integration, and data personnel and establishes appropriate technical competencies, work priorities, and performance expectations.
Develops relationships with manufacturers and technology vendors and evaluates product roadmaps, technical capabilities, support models, interoperability, cybersecurity, data access, and lifecycle considerations.
Participates in enterprise architecture, cybersecurity, data governance, clinical technology, information technology, and other governance activities as appropriate.
Provides leadership during significant technology incidents or failures involving integrated or connected medical technologies and healthcare technology systems and supports emergency management as required.
Evaluates emerging technologies, standards, industry trends, and best practices and advises HTM/CE and organizational leadership regarding opportunities, risks, and future technical requirements.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering, Engineering, or Computer Science required. Master''s degree preferred.
Licensure, Certification & Registration: Certification in Clinical Engineering, Information Systems, or another relevant technical discipline preferred.
Experience: Eight or more years of progressively responsible experience in Clinical Systems Engineering, Clinical Engineering, healthcare information technology, medical-device integration, healthcare technology data/integration, or a related environment, including three or more years of leadership, supervisory, management, or program leadership experience required. Demonstrated experience leading complex multidisciplinary projects involving healthcare
technology, information systems, medical-device integration, clinical operations, data/integration capabilities, and external vendors required.

Pay Range:
$145,000.00 USD - $170,000.00 USD
The pay range listed for this position is the annual base salary range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law.
