The Director of Construction and Design is responsible for leading the planning, design, and execution of construction and renovation projects across Tryon Medical Partners. This role oversees the full construction lifecycle—from concept through completion—while managing external vendors, contractors, and strategic partners. The position ensures projects are delivered on time, within budget, and in compliance with applicable regulatory, safety, and quality standards, supporting the organization’s continued growth.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

Project & Program Leadership
  • Lead all construction and design initiatives, including comprehensive medical office builds and renovations, to potentially include advanced diagnostics services, and Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) projects.
  • Manage the full project lifecycle: feasibility, design development, permitting, construction, commissioning, and close-out.
  • Establish project scopes, schedules, budgets, and milestones; proactively manage risks and resolve issues.
Vendor & Contractor Management
  • Select, contract with, and oversee architects, engineers, general contractors, and specialty consultants.
  • Serve as primary organizational point of contact for construction-related vendors and partners.
  • Ensure vendor performance aligns with contractual obligations, safety standards, and quality expectations.
Financial & Contract Oversight
  • Develop and manage capital project budgets in collaboration with Finance and senior leadership.
  • Review, negotiate, and administer construction-related contracts, change orders, and payment applications.
  • Track financial performance and provide regular reporting on budget status and forecasts.
Regulatory, Safety & Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations, including building codes, life safety, ADA, OSHA, and healthcare-specific requirements.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders to ensure projects meet clinical, operational, and regulatory standards.
  • Oversee construction site safety practices and compliance with organizational policies.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Work closely with Clinical, Operations, IT, Facilities, Procurement, and Finance teams to ensure projects align with organizational and clinical needs.
  • Provide clear communication, status updates, and recommendations to executive leadership.
  • Support long-term growth strategies through scalable facility planning and design standards.

Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Architecture, Engineering, or a related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in healthcare construction and design of medical office development, including a minimum of 3 years in outpatient clinical environments.
  • PMP, LEED AP, and/or Certified Healthcare Constructor (CHC) certification strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex, multi-site construction projects.

Knowledge & Skills
  • Strong working knowledge of healthcare construction codes, regulatory requirements, and safety standards.
  • Proven ability to manage vendor relationships, contracts, and large capital budgets.
  • High level of comfort with financial analysis, project reporting, and executive-level communication.
  • Excellent organizational, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.

Physical Requirements
  • Primarily office-based with regular on-site visits to active construction projects.
  • Periodic travel within the Charlotte region and surrounding markets as needed.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, growth-oriented environment.
  • Work consistently requires walking, standing, sitting, lifting, reaching, stooping, bending, pushing, and pulling.
  • Must be able to lift and support weight of 35 pounds.
  • Ability to concentrate on details.
  • Use of computers for long periods of time.
