    Overview:

    JOB SUMMARY:  The Nurse Director ensures the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care for the Emergency Room Department.  The Director is responsible 24 hours a day, with full accountability for the staffing and management of patient care, for providing professional nursing services in specified patient care areas, and the acquisition, development and utilization of resources including human, material and fiscal needed to meet those responsibilities.  Coordinate scheduling of hospital nursing staff according to patient census and acuity.  Handle the clerical and administrative management of the unit.  Act as a creative leader combining nursing expertise, critical thinking and effective leadership and management skills to ensure that quality care is provided through satisfied and inspired professionals.  Collaborate with Nurse Directors, hospital staff and physicians to achieve goals. Maintain accountability to County, State and Federal agencies as well as The Joint Commission for compliance with applicable laws, regulations and standards and for providing quality patient outcomes.

    Supports staff through monthly department meetings (10/year).

    Develops and implements policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of services. Reviews and revises policies and procedures at least annually.

    Effectively prepares and monitors indicators for quality and continuous improvement.

    Aligns departmental planning with the strategic plan of the organization.

    Demonstrates initiatives to improve own capabilities as a leader.

    Sets goals for self; meets with senior manager to evaluate progress.

    Remains current in professional field.

    Attends 90% of required meetings.

    Maintains licensure, certification as appropriate.

    Effectively uses financial information for strategic and operational decision-making.

    Reads and correctly interprets financial data.

    Consistently remains within established budget SWB/PAPD and supplies/PAPD.

    Monitors and manages employee time and attendance records (eTIME) for accuracy and timeliness through either electronic or manual systems.

    Identifies and implements methods of controlling costs or generating revenue while providing maximum value to both the patient and the hospital.

    Assumes a proactive role in the reduction of workers' compensation injuries in the department by appropriate and timely employee education, investigations and follow-up.  Assures employees utilize proper ergonomics (body mechanics, exercises, and workstation).

    Effectively coaches, counsels and disciplines employees.   Provides ongoing feedback to staff.

    Effectively interviews and selects competent and qualified staff.

    Effectively supervises, delegates, schedules and assigns work to achieve goals.

    Effectively orients, trains and develops staff. Demonstrates commitment to staff's continual learning, growth and development.  This includes assuring staff requirements are met on time (e.g., new employee orientation, initial/annual ethics, and annual updates).

    Assesses qualifications and competency and evaluates staff and contracted staff.  Conducts employee performance evaluations on time.

    Effectively administers policies and procedures regarding safety, environmental health, and risk management.

    Ensures 24-hour provision of nursing services, in accordance with all regulatory requirements.

    Role models, mentors and coaches all staff.  Develops Charge Nurses.

    Ensures individual needs of each patient are met. SERVICESAssists staff in direct patient care, as needed, to assure

    high-quality, cost-effective care.  Works with medical staff and nursing staff to assure admissions and discharges in a timely manner.

    Assures documentation meets all regulatory requirements.

    Assumes 24-hour responsibility for scheduling and staffing; analyzes and recommends staffing needs of department based on patient volume and acuity of patients, documented by patient classification.

    Develops systems to assess and monitor customer service in department.

    Unit, hospital and PSMS survey scores consistently meet or exceed hospital benchmark.

    Develops, implements and maintains departmental P.l. Plan, including quality control activities.

    Recommends priorities and thresholds to Quality Council.  Manages processes to assess, measure, evaluate and implement improvement.  Complies with and submits required reports to Quality Improvement Director by specified deadline.

    Develops and implements policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of services.  Reviews and revises policies and procedures annually.

    Communicates well with Chief Nursing Officer, reports problems/issues and recommends solutions.  Requests assistance as appropriate.

    Performs other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications:

    EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING 

    1. Current CA RN License.
    2. BS degree in Nursing or other healthcare-related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.MS degree in Healthcare –related field preferred.
    3. Three years of nursing experienc to include clinical skills and managerial/leadership functions. 
    4. Certification in specialty area preferred.
