The Director Facilities Engineering directs the maintenance, operations, and control of the physical plant, buildings, and its dependent equipment. Oversight and responsibilities will include large scale capital projects and ongoing growth planning within Community North Hospital campus; to include, specialty hospital Heart/Vascular Hospital, Surgery Center, Community Proper, IP Behavioral Health and North Cancer Center. The Director holds primary responsibility for assuring that the Facility and Engineering Services meet all regulatory and accreditation compliance requirements related to the buildings, systems, and various codes. The Director is also responsible for dealing with large and small unexpected emergencies that affect normal building function and/or its occupants. Through sound engineering practice and management, the building systems are maintained to provide a safe, reliable operating environment for patient care. The resources of the maintenance departments are directed to provide their respective services in the most cost effective manner possible consistent with high quality standards. Coordinates and makes recommendations to management for the required capital investment to ensure continued services of the physical plant and equipment.

Exceptional Skills and Qualifications

Applicants for this position should be able to collaborate with others in a team setting, have excellent communication skills, and a positive attitude toward problem-solving.

  • 4 year / Bachelor"s Degree : Bachelor degree required, preferably in Facilities Management, Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or Health Sciences. (Required)
  • In lieu of the above education requirements, a combination of experience and education will be considered
  • Certifications/Licensures: (Certified Healthcare Facility Manager (CHFM) or other nationally recognized certification pertaining to Facilities) (Preferred)
  • 10+ years: Minimum of ten (10) years' experience in healthcare facilities management, building design, construction, and operations. (Required)
  • Ensures physical plan, buildings, equipment, operations, and actions are consistent with requirements of regulatory, insurance, and inspecting agencies (i.e., NFPA, NEC, State Fire Marshal, Division of Elevator Safety, USDA, FDA, EPA, Department of Public Works, Indianapolis Air Pollution, JCAHO, CAP, State Board of Health, CARF, and various insurance companies. a. Remains knowledgeable of appropriate laws, codes, and requirements of the respective agencies and how such regulations and standards apply to hospital situations. b. Initiates actions where appropriate with proper documentation to assure compliance. c. Participates in the planning and implementation of the Hospital Life Safety Master Plan.
  • Ensures that the mission and goals of area(s) of responsibility are developed, achieved, and aligned with the Network mission, vision, and strategic directions. a. Communicates Network mission, vision, and strategic directions so they are understandable to employees and other customers. b. Seeks employee and customer input in the development of departmental goals and objectives. c. Develops goals, objectives, and action plans for the department(s) which support the goals and objectives of the Network. d. Measures and monitors progress toward achievement of goals and objectives; understands and addresses variance.
  • Ensures the integration of quality improvement principles and practice into daily work. a. Serves as a visible, active role model in leading, sponsoring, and participating in quality improvement initiatives. b. Recognizes that all team members possess the expertise to make decision about their jobs and empowers team members to innovate and to improve processes/results within established boundaries. c. Solicit team member input and feedback, acts upon it accordingly, and involves them in problem-solving and decision-making. d. Involves, cooperates with, and integrates with other departments in standardizing processes and pursuing opportunities for improvement. e. Supports and facilitates the work team in it journey towards self-directedness and shared ownership. f. Demonstrates a focus on customer knowledge, data, and process knowledge as the basis for planning and decision making. g. Shares information with employees to provide a macro view about: healthcare trends; organizational trends; financial data; departmental goals; achievements; overall performance.
  • Utilizes labor, material, and equipment resources to address priorities, improve productivity, and quality while minimizing cost. a. Monitors and reports key indicators of operations efficiency and productivity. b. Develops and maintains programs on monitor and evaluate quality of services provides. c. Initiates actions which improve productivity and reduce cost. d. Develops departmental budgets and maintains contributions margin variance of no more than three ( percent without proper documentation and authorization.
  • Provides for effective communication throughout department and between own and other departments by successfully integrating department (inter- and intra-hospital; inter- and intra-Network; external integrations). Presents oral and written material in a clear and concise manner. Encourages open two-way communication with subordinates and superiors. Provides follow-up on issues and questions raised by subordinates in regular employee meetings. Interacts and participates with Managers to share and integrate the maintenance responsibilities with other hospital departments. Interacts with Network counterparts to ensure application of the best demonstrates practices in a consistent, patient-centered, and standardized fashion across our Network of services (see integration plan). Coordination departmental activities to resolve problems at the lowest possible organizational level.
  • Originates innovative ideas and develops ideas into a logical, creative, and flexible plan to implement desired change. Remains flexible in dealing with change, sacrificing for the maximum net benefit to the hospital. Adjusts to unusual or changing work situations in an effective manner. Continually reviews operations and the work environment to anticipate change and meet new demands. Analyzes opportunities and alternatives then initiates refinements to improve operations and productivity.
  • Develops and maintains an employee work force in a manner that produces a productive, quality-conscious work climate; administers personnel-related policies and programs in a fair and consistent manner. Adheres to hospital and departmental policies concerning personnel management. Maintains dynamic performance appraisal program as defined in SPP: Per-4 (all job descriptions are kept up-to-date, provides regular feedback to employees concerning their performance relative to the established performance standards). Contributes to the growth of others by identifying employees' developmental needs and methods that they can use to address such needs (provide evidence of employee participation in identifying developmental needs, consults with HRD when appropriate, etc.). Communicates expectation, provides timely feedback to employees on their strengths and weaknesses, and ensures opportunities for individual improvement. Serves as a teacher, mentor, and role model to employees in area(s) of responsibility and elsewhere. Provides opportunities for employees to participate in projects and/or continuing education above and beyond the normal duties of the employee's job description. Utilizes participative management techniques when appropriate to gather and implement employee input into department and hospital operations (considers employee input).
  • Recommends and manages building system or equipment capital projects in conjunction with Network facility project managers. Determines functional or operational deficiencies in building systems and equipment. Completes preliminary design analysis including alternatives and implementation costs and submits same for budget consideration. Once approved, completes technological assessment to determine the most cost-effective, long-term solution and participates in the final design process of the selected solution. Coordinates the construction and/or implementation with both hospital and contractor personnel. Ensures the finished project meets the goals of quality, timeliness, cost, and long-term maintainability.
  • Actively participates in the facilities design process to provide the optimum environment for patient care. Regularly participates as a member of the Network Facilities Project Team or appropriate hospital committee including Chairperson of CHS Space Planning Committee.
