What you will do::

The Director, Fleet Management is a senior leader responsible for the strategic direction, operational excellence, and continuous improvement of a nationwide, multi-modal fleet operation. This role ensures optimal fleet performance, regulatory compliance, cost efficiency, and alignment with corporate sustainability and safety goals. The Fleet Director partners closely with regional and divisional leadership to maximize asset utilization, drive innovation, and deliver exceptional service across the organization.

 

Strategic Leadership

  • Participate in the development and execution of fleet strategies aligned with corporate logistics, financial, and sustainability objectives.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to divisional leadership, including Division Presidents, Regional Vice Presidents, Branch Managers, and Finance VPs.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders across Sales, Customer Service, Distribution, and Finance to align fleet strategies with business priorities and customer expectations.
  • Lead large-scale transformation initiatives, including system rollouts, organizational changes, or cost-optimization programs, while maintaining operational continuity.

Operational Oversight

  • Monitor, analyze, and present program performance metrics (KPIs) to key stakeholders and business partners to support data-driven decision-making.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership and field-level stakeholders to ensure KPI alignment and drive performance improvements across the organization.
  • Oversee all aspects of fleet operations, including procurement, maintenance, compliance, safety, and lifecycle management.
  • Ensure optimal fleet-to-driver ratios and vehicle utilization based on seasonal forecasts and business needs.
  • Monitor and manage fleet budgets, capital expenditures, and cost-saving initiatives.

Technology & Innovation Leadership

  • Identify and implement emerging technologies (e.g., AI-driven route optimization, EV telematics, predictive maintenance) to improve fleet efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Collaborate with IT and data teams to integrate fleet systems with enterprise-wide supply chain, safety, and performance platforms.
  • Stay current on market trends, regulatory changes, and digital innovations to inform long-term fleet strategy.

Compliance & Safety

  • Ensure full compliance with DOT, FMCSA, EPA, and other applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Champion a culture of safety through training, monitoring, and proactive risk mitigation strategies.
  • Leverage telematics to monitor driver behavior, vehicle performance, and safety metrics, and to inform continuous improvement initiatives.

Vendor & Asset Management

  • Manage vendor relationships and contracts for maintenance, leasing, and equipment procurement.
  • Oversee preventive maintenance programs and major repair strategies in partnership with core vendors.
  • Support the administration of vehicle titles, registrations, permits, fuel/mileage reporting, and tax compliance.

Performance & Reporting

  • Track and report on KPIs, fleet utilization, safety performance, and budget adherence.
  • Drive continuous improvement through data-driven decision-making and collaborative engagement with cross-functional partners.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Deep knowledge of fleet operations, asset management, and transportation regulations.
  • Strong financial acumen and experience managing large budgets.
  • Proficiency in fleet management systems, such as Samsara, Geotab, or equivalent platforms, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strategic thinker with strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to lead transformation in a dynamic, matrixed environment.
What you will bring::
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in fleet or transportation management.
  • 5+ years in a senior leadership role managing large, geographically dispersed teams.
  • Proven track record of improving fleet performance and reducing total cost of ownership (TCO).
  • Willingness to travel up to 50%.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Logistics, Business Administration, Engineering, or related field.
  • Experience in a Fortune 500 environment or private fleet operations.
  • Background in retail, manufacturing, or distribution sectors.
  • Experience implementing electric vehicle (EV) or alternative fuel strategies.
  • Lean Six Sigma or PMP certification.
